A mid-16th to mid-18th-century glazed red earthenware (GRE) vessel with a tripod base has been included in Thetford Ancient House Museum's 100 Objects.

It's ! This 16th Century cooking pot fragment was discovered in a chalk mine on Station Road. Community Curators from the Breckland Society selected it for inclusion in our special exhibition A History of Ancient House in 100 Objects.

“I like this because it poses the question ‘why was it there?’ Did it hold food for the miners or were people actually living in the mine? Why were the other remains such as dog and cat bones and goose eggshell found with it? Does this suggest a Victorian picnic?
Where was the pot made? Could it have been downriver at Ely?”

The new fabric series website, including Norfolk as well as Suffolk, is now published. You can view it here: https://eastanglianmedievalpottery.org.uk/ There are new fabrics for both Norfolk and Suffolk, and some fabrics now also have microscope photos.

Please note that the old address (suffolkmedpot.co.uk) is no longer working. This is still not the official version of the website, as we are still waiting for HE to provide a database on ADS. However, this one will be semi-permanent. The fabric series list is included for download as a pdf but has not been updated since 2020 and there are a few new fabrics since then. The updated version will be published in East Anglian Archaeology in 2025/2026.

The fabric series is best viewed on a PC as I haven't sorted out the galleries for mobile use yet.

Ipswich Museum has some great displays and exhibitions, and it doesn't get nearly enough visitors (passing footfall is limited) - well worth checking out if you're in the area.

I have been involved with this one since the inception of the project. I remember the first skull popping out in the mechanical digger's bucket, and Jo Caruth and I celebrated because we had found the Saxon cemetery we were looking for. A couple of decades later, and more involvement with analysis of both the human remains and the pottery, plus copy-editing and typesetting the book, it's now published!

Here's something you don't see very often. A lateish medieval Grimston jug with white slip decoration in the form of flowers. One of the very few I have seen in 25 years of pottery analysis. From a small village in Central Norfolk.
