💫Check out what we’ve got coming up this week...

Our Play and Learn team are kicking things off with the first day of our October Half Term Family Activities tomorrow. These creative workshops are designed to suit different ages and abilities - it’s a great way to get everyone together to make, play and create!

We also welcome you back in the galleries tomorrow for our 12.30 talks. Join one of our knowledgeable gallery assistants for a short insight into one of our current exhibitions. 🗣️These are informal gallery talks that last 15-20mins and cover a range of topics.

Our curators are busy prepping for their exhibition walkthrough this Wed 21, 1pm – 2pm. Join our curatorial team as they talk through Mud is everything by Julia Isídrez and Midnight Sun by Sarah Cunningham. Feel free to ask questions and share any thoughts or reflections during the session.

We have a busy day on Sun with Rarescale returning to Studio 1 for three musical performances, each lasting around 30mins. 🎶 This is the first time rarescale will be responding to our new exhibitions, they will explore the creative realm of the nocturnal and the spiritual journey into dark, before celebrating daybreak and the return of precious light.

On Sun afternoon, join Millie Quick in Sarah Cunningham’s exhibition for Grow your own planet, a workshop session suitable for anyone over the age of 14 years. Learn, play and keep a new worldbuilding game - you are invited to create your own personal lands, as well as adding to a huge shared map. 🗺️

The striking colouration of currently exhibiting Paraguayan ceramicist Julia Isídrez's ceramic artworks is not the result of a painted on glaze, but rather the direct result of the relationship between fire and nature. This unique aesthetic emerges from a rigorous, two-part firing process that relies on traditional wood firing and an innovative use of organic materials; mud.

The journey begins inside a traditional wooden kiln where the blazing fire creates flash marks and ash deposits on a raw, earthy base palette. The ash melts onto the bare clay, creating natural and often unpredictable markings.

This initial firing can take days, establishing each piece with a uniquely rugged texture and colouring that is drawn entirely from the wood and the clay. To achieve her signature finish, Julia wraps each piece in mango leaves before returning them to the kiln for a second firing. As the kiln heats up, the tightly wrapped mango leaves combust in an oxygen-deprived environment, forcing trapped carbon into the pores of the clay.

The natural oils and minerals from the mango leaves react with the pre-fired surface, creating a spectrum of deep, smoky gradients and mottled variations with a burnished sheen which appears almost metallic, like bronze.

By using these traditional Guaraní and inherited methods of making and firing, Julia creates extraordinary depths with her materials. The final artworks are not just ceramics made from clay but a tangible capture of smoke, ash and leaf.

Tonight's the night! 🎉

We are kicking off Print Fair Contemporary with our Launch Evening this evening from 5pm.

Join us to be the first to browse the fair with over 40 stalls of printers, artists and illustrators. With so much choice we are certain you won't be leaving empty handed! 🛍️

Not only do we have a fantastic line-up of stall holders, we also have an exciting evening with music from local DJ, Loose Joints , drinks in Blend at Contemporary, food from Bombay Deli and late evening access to our galleries. 🎶

For those who can arrive at 5pm, we are offering free drinks for the first 100 visitors - don't miss out on yours.🍷

We're delighted to have Bombay Deli joining us for the launch of our Print Fair this Friday! 🤩

A Nottingham favourite for over 30 years, Bombay Deli has been serving up authentic Indian flavours, from their signature samosas to delicious street food.
