We are pleased to announce that the National Army Museum will be the new home of the Lord Ashcroft collection of Victoria Crosses and George Crosses.

Further details of the new partnership between Lord Ashcroft and the National Army Museum relating to the display of his VC and GC collection will be released over the coming months.

in 1812, the 45th formed part of Wellington’s force which stormed the fortress of Badajoz by escalade.

In this battle Lieutenant McPhearson of the 45th seized the sentry, and, making his way to the flagstaff, hauled down the flag and hoisted his own red jacket, for want of a British Flag, on the tower of the castle to indicate that it was in our hands and testified to the gallant part the 45th had taken in the assault. The 1st Battalion honours the memory of this day by the Trooping of the colour followed by a General Holiday for all ranks.

The below included Lance Corporal Arthur Mantle of 1/8th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters (Nottingham and Derbyshire Regiment). Arthur was killed in action when in the attack on the villages of Ramicourt and Montbrehain, France on October 3rd 1918. 🌺

On this day 111 years ago the Battle of Neuve Chapelle was taking place. Private Jacob Rivers of the 1st Battalion The Sherwood Foresters was killed in action. He was later awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on that day. Read more on the link below

This week marks 108 years since the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (10-13 March 1915). This was the first large-scale offensive organised during the Great War (1914-18) by the British Army.

To celebrate National Hat Day, we’ve taken a look at our Hat Collection here at the Museum of the Mercian Regiment. We hold over a 100 different hats in the collection, which were all worn by Sherwood Foresters from the early 18th Century until present day.

This year we put a call out to local schools for the creation of Poppies for our gallery in Nottingham Castle and we have been inundated with Poppies. Yesterday Private Derby welcomed some of those who contributed inlcuding the care home residents who knitted some poppies for us.

This VE and VJ Day commemoration project is supported using public funding by UK Government through Arts Council England’
