in 1917 the 1st Battalion fought in action at Westhoek, Belgium during the Third Battle at Ypres also known as Passchendaele. Westhoek saw fierce fighting between the British and the Germans, and was the most successful of the operations of the Third Battle.

The Foresters themselves managed to capture 200 prisoners and 19 machine guns. For their services Foresters were awarded with 2 Distinguished Service Orders, 7 Military Cross’, 8 Distinguished Conduct Medals, and 19 Military Medals. It is believed that it is a record for any single battalion in the history of the British Army.

There were 33 Sherwood Foresters Battalions for the First World War which fought at many locations on the Western Front. The Sherwood Foresters were awarded 57 Battle Honors after the end of the war.

this day in 1809 the Battle at Talavera was fought 120 km southwest of Madrid between the French and the Anglo-Spanish forces. The British were facing a force of double their numbers, but the 45th Regiment as part of the advanced guard showed exceptional discipline and steadiness. In defence of a strategic hill position, the 45th and 60th Regiments maintained their position in the face of a break in the line behind them by the French. The victory over the French forces led personally by Joseph Bonaparte resulted in the commander of the 45th, Wellesley, being elevated to the peerage as Viscount Wellington of Talavera. This battle further proved the conspicuous nature of the 45th Regiment.

ieutenant General William Guard was born in Exeter in 1773. He joined the 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, as an Ensign by purchase, on the 13th of June 1789. He was aged sixteen years.

The Seven Years War 1756-1763 encapsulated five continents, split between the Kingdom of Great Britain and Kingdom of France. Louisburg was a strong French fortress in Canada, in an important trading centre due to its role as Canada’s first lighthouse. The British and French forces fought at Louisburg from 8th of June 1758 to the 27th July 1758, resulting in the surrender of 5,600 French forces on the 17th.

The officers of the 45th Regiment (latterly the Sherwood Foresters) shared in this victory, which had been made possible from their role in driving the French from their shoreward defences and erecting a two-gun battery during the final days of the siege. Their actions at Louisburg awarded them their first battle honours.
