Runswick Bay this morning …. before it got busy. This is one of my favourite inspirations for painting.

I had 2 swims, head under as well. It was so cold! When we were in Andalusia recently swimming in the sea there was quite a chill - and I thought ‘I don’t think the North Sea is much colder!’

So wrong :)

A week of colour, connection, creativity, sunshine, stillness, laughter, yoga, sketchbooks, shared meals - and beautiful people.

Sooo grateful for this wonderful group who joined us at Casa Surrender for our painting and yoga retreat in Andalusia. Thank you all for bringing your warmth, openness, creativity and energy to the week :)

Until next time …

If you’d love to join us next time, feel free to message me for details about future retreats :)

Lots of smiles at today’s Mediterranean painting session.

We were working with creating warm sunny colours from just 3 primaries.

It’s always such a pleasure to paint with this group. Some of these wonderful people have been coming along for nearly 2 years now, which means a lot.

If this feels like something you’d enjoy, I run regular workshops for beginners and those wanting to build confidence.

I had a rather special moment yesterday…

I received a message from the lovely team at to say that someone had come in and bought three of my paintings in one go.

These two were part of that collection.

There’s always something quite moving about knowing a piece has connected with someone enough that they want to live with it.

I feel very grateful to work with such a friendly and supportive gallery - they create the kind of calm, welcoming space where people can take their time and connect with the work.

And to whoever took these home… thank you :)

A really lovely painting morning today at Helmsley Arts Centre.

We spent time exploring watercolour textures and enjoying the slightly unpredictable nature of the medium.

There’s always something special about a group of people coming together to paint … a calm, focused energy with plenty of laughter as well.

If this looks like something you’d enjoy, I run regular workshops for beginners and those wanting to build confidence with watercolour.

What’s your favourite watercolour texture technique?

A little glimpse behind today’s demonstration for Driffield Art Club…

This piece is built up in layers, starting with the simplest step - just painting the tree shape with clean water.

From there, I introduce acrylic ink and let it move and spread, before adding touches of watercolour to create those unexpected textures.

Once everything is dry, I can start to bring it together with watercolour, creating a few background and foreground details. As the bluebells are out now, I couldn't resist adding some hints of these lovely spring flowers.

It’s a lovely way to work - loose, unpredictable, and very freeing.

If you’re curious about how this all comes together in real life, I’ll be opening my studio this Thursday evening, so if you’re nearby and would like to see how I work (or just pop in for a look), you’d be very welcome.

Less is more. Sometimes a painting needs space to breathe - just like we do.

38cm x 28cm on Saunders Waterford hotpressed 200lb paper, inspired by the North Coast of Brittany.

I love .cuthberts.mill papers. I always say to students that if you’re going to spend money on your materials - spend it on paper. It makes so much difference.

What’s your favourite watercolour paper?
