The splendid Grade I listed Great Hall is one of the finest examples of Norman domestic architecture in Northern Europe. It is adorned with over 200 ornate Horseshoes presented by Peers of the Realm, and also features 12th Century sculptures. It is also the oldest English Court in continuous use, with ceremonial Crown Court sittings taking place biennially. This beautiful historic site is licensed for civil marriages.

We are aware of the extensive damage to the steps leading from Cutts Close to Oakham Castle, which has made the area unstable and unsafe. As a result, the steps and surrounding area are temporarily closed until further notice.

Rutland County Council is seeking advice from English Heritage regarding the most appropriate way forward, but due to the historic significance of the site this process may take some time.

The recent damage has, unfortunately, affected the steps and also caused significant damage to the motte.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while specialist advice is sought and the safest, most appropriate solution is considered.

Oakham Castle was built between 1180 and 1190 by Walkelin de Ferrers, lord of the manor and nephew of Robert de Ferrers.

Its impressive Great Hall features a central nave flanked by two arcaded aisles, each supported by three striking stone columns. Look closely and you’ll spot remarkable 12th-century carvings, including six musicians, all painstakingly crafted from local Clipsham stone.

Did you know about the famous horseshoe tradition at Oakham Castle?

Step inside to discover an extraordinary display of over 240 gilded horseshoes. Each one has been presented to the Lord of the Manor by royalty and peers of the realm.

The oldest surviving horseshoe dates back to 1470, following Edward IV’s visit after the Battle of Losecoat Field.

More recent additions include horseshoes from Queen Camilla (then Duchess of Cornwall, 2014) and a special double presentation from Prince Edward and Sophie in 2024.

A unique tradition that’s been going strong for over 500 years!
