Then & Now: Oakham, Rutland

Once home to Furley & Hassan, a bustling general furnishings store serving Oakham’s community by horse and cart. The red-brick building still stands proud, a lasting reminder of the town’s rich past.

It’s amazing to see how much has changed… and how much has stayed the same!

Did you know Rutland County Museum in Oakham is housed in a building that once trained cavalry horses in the 1790s?

The site dates back to 1794–1795, when it was built as a riding school for the Rutland Fencible Cavalry. Today, it’s home to the Rutland County Museum, which opened in 1969 and now preserves the story of Rutland’s rural life, farming heritage, archaeology and social history.

From old farming tools to fascinating local artefacts, the museum brings the county’s past to life. The Museum is open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am – 4pm with free admission.
