🪏 This Roman brooch depicting a rabbit or hare was discovered in Frisby on the Wreake in Leicestershire.

Made from copper alloy, it measures 31mm long and 14mm wide. It is in very good condition with a green patina, an incised circle for an eye, and a body comprising three decorated cells, the outer two filled with blue enamel but the inner one empty. It is believed to date from AD100-AD200

This brooch is just one of the many thousands of objects recorded by The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), which records archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales.

📰 Find out more about the work of PAS in issue 1 of the magazine, which has an interview with the Finds Liaison Officer for Leicestershire and Rutland Portable Antiquities Scheme.

How do you make a torc?

Thanks to your overwhelming support, we are so close to reaching our £10,000 target to help save the Leicestershire Torc with two weeks left on the Crowdfunder!

Whilst we work on the final push, we thought you might like to learn a little more about how this incredible object was likely made 3,200 years ago.

Ulster Museum, Belfast have a similar twisted bar torc in their collection, the amazing Corrard Torc.

Take a look at their fascinating video featuring Curator, Dr Greer Ramsey and metalsmith, Brian Clarke discussing the object and creating a replica torc (3 minutes in). The film also explains how these torcs may have ended up in the coiled shapes that we see now.

In 2024 this amazing object came into my office. LEIC-BD528B is a is a four-flange twisted bar gold torc dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1300-1100 BC). The torc measures approximately 47cm in length and weighs 243g. It is formed of two decorated terminals affixed at either end of three spiral-twisted bars. This is the only torc to have ever been discovered in Leicestershire!

Last week I got to work with this beautiful Early Medieval disc headed pin. The front of the pin is decorated with four panels of chip carved decoration, divided by an equal armed cross. The decorative quarters consist of two panels of zoomorphic interlace and two of interlinked knots.
The pin shaft is missing as well as a dome headed rivet in the centre. This one was found in Lincolnshire.
