🧐 Ever wondered what it takes to look after a castle perched atop a cliff?

Specialist surveyors from Fairhurst have been carrying out a detailed inspection of the rock face beneath Dunollie Castle - rope access, careful documentation, the lot. A previous survey in 2024 identified one area as being at risk of rockfall, and this latest phase of work takes a closer look and includes an options appraisal for what comes next. The aim is to help ensure the long-term stability of the castle and reduce the risk of rockfall to the ground below.

It's slow, specialist work, and it's the kind of behind-the-scenes care that keeps a historic site like Dunollie standing for future generations.

With huge thanks to the Pilgrim's Trust, who funded this phase of work, and to Historic Environment Scotland and the North American Clan MacDougall Association, whose support made the original 2024 assessment possible.

We've got some exciting news! In a couple of weeks, we're holding a pop-up exhibition to mark the end of our The National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland project, Sophy and White.

The closing theme is Cobalt Blue, looking at cobalt as an aesthetic, a material and a major ethical concern, through objects from our collection.

There's a lovely thread running through it too. Our Education and Learning Officer, Flora, has spent this year working with students from Oban High School to recreate a dress from our textile collection. The original belonged to Jean Hadfield, mother of our 31st Clan Chief, Madame Morag MacDougall. Flora and the students hand sewed the recreation themselves, using materials donated by members of the public earlier this year.

Both dresses will be shown side by side, along with other collection objects and a film the students made.

📍 Silver Birch Gallery, The Rockfield Centre
📅 Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May, 10am-4pm
It's FREE to visit, and everyone is welcome!

🎉 Five in a row! Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds has been awarded the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award for 2026 - the fifth year running.

This one comes straight from you. The award is based on reviews left by visitors, so every kind word, every photo, every recommendation has helped put Dunollie among the top-rated visitor attractions in the world.

A huge thank you to everyone who has wandered the grounds, climbed up to the castle, lingered in the 1745 House, or stopped for a cuppa at the Kettle cafe. Don't forget that a single entry ticket becomes an annual pass - come back as often as you like for the rest of the season.

There's a stone in our gatehouse that sticks out a bit further than the others. Walk under it and you'd never know. Behind it sits a hole. It's called a machicole. Better known as a murder hole!

What was it for? It was for pouring hot oil or fat down onto anyone trying to breach the walls of Dunollie... You can stand under it any time we are open, but we recommend the guided tour (no oil, we promise!). It runs at 11.30am, Tuesday to Friday. Booking ahead online is sensible - dunollie.org

Down in the cellar at Dunollie, there are marks in the walls that look a bit like basket weaving. That's because they are!

When the cellar was built, woven willow mats were pressed into the wet lime mortar to hold it in place while it set. Once it dried, they peeled the willow back. The imprints stayed.

There are very few Scottish castles where you can still see this. Dunollie is one of them. If you want to see it too, our guided tours start at 11.30am, Tuesday to Friday. Book ahead at dunollie.org!
