Ocean Explorer Centre

Ocean Explorer Centre This small and free marine science visitor centre is open daily 10am to 4pm. We also offer annual passes to locals - at the cost of a single entry.

Explore how the oceans works and how researchers and educators at the Scottish Association for Marine Science contribute to making the marine environment more sustainable. The centre includes a main exhibition area with displays on life in the ocean, the seabed, plankton, biofuels from algae, ocean currents and the Arctic. Additionally it has an observatory where you can operate a camera underneat

h the pontoon and listen to the sounds in the Firth of Lorn. We also have a super cool (polar themed!) small cinema, where we show short films about the marine environment and marine science. A cafe with a little shop concludes what we have on offer at the moment, but we have plans to expand into the garden! By the way, you can come into the cafe on its own without having to pay to come into the centre. We do want you to come back and visit often! Finally, we are a lot more than just a visitor centre. We offer lots of workshops for schools or community groups, put on events relating to the sea (from talks and walks to films and workshops) and allow community groups to meet in our facilities after hours. We are keen to consider any suggestions from our friends about future developments.

Day 22: Today is the first day of our Christmas holidays and we will be closed until Monday 5th January. Thank you to everyone who has come to see us this year: our local friends, tourists from overseas and the UK, school pupils, colleagues and visitors to SAMS. And the dogs and puppies too! We love to see them! 🐶 😆

Day 21: This sparkly starfish not only reminds us of the Christmas star but the amazing animals that are found in rockpools and out at sea. Most uk starfish have 5 arms but the 7-armed has 7! Starfish eat mussels, oysters, clams, snails, worms and barnacles and their mouth is on the underside. They have 2 stomachs and one can extend outside of their body! It can release digestive enzymes onto large prey breaking it down into liquid form so it is easier to eat. Some starfish can also regenerate missing arms!

Day 20: These beautiful scallop shells remind us that shells are home to many sea snails and other soft bodied creatures like oysters or limpets. They provide a protection against predators and prevent them from drying out at low tide. Scallops are bivalves which means their shell is divided into two halves joined by a flexible hinge. If you come to the beach at the OEC you can find a large variety of sea shells. My favourite is the bright yellow flat periwinkle! 😊

Day 19: This little mermouse is here to tell all the children we have lots of kids’ activities in the OEC. We have TREASURE HUNTS where you can go around looking for the hidden orcas or flapper skates, matching their fins or spots to collect a word. We also have a molecule hunt for two different age groups, also translated into several languages. There’s even a quiz for older kids or adults! It’s all about satellites and what they’re used for. There’s also a range of activities on changing themes at the colouring table. Add to that the microscope, the sound display, the Arctic tunnel, the fascinating globe, the Flappy and the observatory, the OEC makes for a great morning or afternoon out! And don’t forget a treat in the beach café 🍰 ☕️

Day 18: Sea urchins are fascinating animals. Some can live for around 200 years! They are small spiny round creatures that graze on seaweed. They can have as many as 2500 eyes which are actually light sensing organs on their tube feet! They are used to study the effect of warming waters and SAMS’ research has shown that if they are exposed to diluted seawater they can deteriorate. With climate change the UK is due to get wetter reducing salinity in the sea. Melting glaciers will also bring more freshwater into the oceans which could impact sea urchins and other marine life.

This year in the OEC we showed these amazing creatures to nursery and early years groups 😃
