Have you ever heard of a rusticle? 🚢

Any visitor to the Titanic wreck is quickly taken aback by the stalactite-like life forms growing over the ship's iron hull. Formed from iron, calcium, silica and other minerals, rusticles grow vertically and show signs of annual growth - and together they combine to form one organism that is slowly converting the Titanic into one of the largest creatures on Earth.

Some of the microbes within them are thought to have drifted hundreds of miles from volcanic vents in the east, eventually settling on the wreck and beginning a life anew.

This particular sample was removed from the outer ring of a larger piece that now sits back at the wreck site where it originally began to grow. It was part of the personal collection of Dik Barton, former President of RMS Titanic - the first British person ever to dive to the wreck.

Titanic Exhibition: Birmingham is back at the NEC today - and we could not be more excited to welcome you in.

The extended summer run is now open in Hall 10, and alongside everything that made the spring dates so special, we are proud to be unveiling a collection of brand new artefacts on public display for the very first time - including a genuine Titanic lifeboat plaque, fragments recovered from a Second Class cabin on the ocean floor, and much more.
