This Saturday join us for an immersive performance created in response to John Ruskin's prophetic public lecture 'Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century' (1884), which highlighted the disastrous results of industrialisation, the human role in climate change and the effects of air pollution.

Developed by Dr Tom Payne from Sheffield Hallam University with an interdisciplinary team of artists and scientists, the performance combines live spoken text, digital projection and a unique weather soundscape to conjure a striking atmosphere of environmental unease that evokes the climate crisis.

Before the performance take a chance to explore the museum collection after dark while the bar is open.

It is National Poetry Day, so we thought we would share this poem from the archives inspired by the findings in Kirkdale Cave, which were identified as hyaena fossils by William Buckland, the University of Oxford's first reader of Geology.

Congratulations on Dr Frankie Dunn on being appointed Associate Professor of Natural History across the Museum and the Department of Earth Sciences.

Dr Frankie seeks to understand how the body plans of major groups of animals were assembled in deep time. This research primarily focuses on exceptionally preserved fossils which retain delicate tissues (such as guts) and encompasses a major event in the history of life referred to as the ‘Cambrian Explosion’. This was a geologically brief interval during which all the major groups of animals first appear in the fossil record. She also works on the strange fossils of the Ediacaran Period - immediately preceding the Cambrian Explosion - and which represent antecedents to many living animal groups. Ultimately, this fossil data is combined with phylogenies (evolutionary trees) to understand what long extinct species can tell us about the origin of animals.

This year marks Star Trek's 60th anniversary! Dr Emma Nicholls wanted her staff presenting case to celebrate the geology of Star Trek, so we said 'Make it so!'. You can beam up to the Museum anytime between now and November to learn more about the specimens and stories chosen in this temporary presenting case.

Over 200 years ago, William Smith published the first geological map of England and Wales. This would have been an incredible feat under any circumstance, requiring an enormous breadth of geological knowledge; however Smith’s accomplishment was extraordinary because he achieved it on his own.
