A lovely project that we took part in

Members of The Royal Burgh of Peebles Callants Club met recently in the Tontine Hotel to unveil a restored oil on canvas painting.
The painting was gifted to the club by Mr John Maule, grandson of one of the founding members of the club Frank Bain and shows the Old Parish Church, Court House and Cuddy Bridge.

Frank had the painting commissioned in 1946 and it was to be sold to raise funds to repair or purchase new costumes for the first full Beltane since 1939.
Frank took a liking to the painting and purchased it for himself. Although Frank died shortly afterwards, the painting hung in his living room for a further 20 years before it ended up in several cupboards over the years.

The club have had the painting professionally cleaned by Kenneth Brien, and then framed by local picture framer Toby Watts of Tweed Art.

There has been a long-standing association between the Callants Club and the Tontine Hotel and the club are delighted that the Tontine have allowed the painting to be hung in the Callants lounge for all to see.
