ON THIS DAY: At 2:16pm on the 2nd June 1970, the Emergency Services were called to the southern side of the Cleddau Bridge. A 150 ton section of the structure had collapsed onto the village, Pembroke Ferry, below during construction.
Tragically, four of the workers lost their lives. William Baxendale, George Hamilton. Evan Phillips and James Thompson were all killed in the incident. Another five were injured.
Errors in the box girder design caused the collapse. Work on the bridge did not restart until 1972 and it was not until 1975 that the bridge was finally completed.
