American and Canadian Impressionists in Cornwall 1880s - 1930s

Art historian Catherine Wallace returns to The Poly to explore North American and Canadian artists who came to Cornwall from the mid-1880s—mainly St Ives, where Impressionism, encouraged by visits from James Abbot McNeil Whistler, prevailed.

They were largely landscape and maritime painters, including several Canadian women drawn to St Ives’s light. Most stayed months; some longer—Walter Elmer Schofield (1867–1944) made Cornwall his permanent home.
