SODA, PORCELAIN, VESSEL my exhibition will be coming to a close on Saturday. There is just time to see the exhibition in person at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre gallery in Bloomsbury or online.
Curating an exhibition involves working on many levels. Photography, publicity and social media but most of all inspiring and engaging with visitors who love to share their enjoyment and experience of the unique qualities of ceramics.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff for their skill, knowledge and attention to detail in displaying my work. Also to for his beautiful images.

SODA, PORCELAIN, VESSEL.
I make bowls and I give them other names. Bowls are probably one of the earliest elemental forms to be made from clay. Their everydayness allows us to connect with them in so many ways. I make vessels that cross the boundaries of utility and art. My guardian vessels are essentially large bowl forms, which to me, carry an emotional even spiritual function. They line up on my mantelpiece like family portraits offering quiet guidance, support and reassurance. They are often given a big hug ! My exhibition continues until this weekend, Saturday 23rd May.

SODA, PORCELAIN, VESSEL
Crossing the boundary between art and utensil I aspire to make pots which have a place in our contemporary life. The shapes of vessels have been with us for as long as people have needed objects to use and bring beauty into their living spaces.
These jars are a combination of throwing and hand building techniques. They have softer, more organic forms with drawn and carved surface textures enhanced by the gentle palette from the kiln. I use porcelain for its whiteness and the special luminous quality which no other clay has. Copper as a single colouring mineral and soda firing. Over time I have stripped away what I believe are unnecessary materials and process to develop are more sustainable practice. A group of jars are now showing as part of my solo exhibition until May 23rd.

I have a longstanding affection for the Craft Potters Association. I have been a fellow of the CPA since 1986 and was the council chair for 12 years. So, it is both a pleasure and a challenge to take on a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Ceramics Gallery in Bloomsbury, London.

Soda, Porcelain, Vessel, will present around sixty pieces. Some were selected from firings in the last year, the remainder were made and fired through the past Winter months. My work is defined by my firing techniques, and this collection shows something of the depth and range of surface that can be achieved by a strictly enforced limitation of materials. The soda-fired vessels in the exhibition cross the boundaries of art and utensil in their concept and form. The exhibition opens on Thursday with a PV on Wednesday evening.

A new year starts with thinking about new pots for my solo exhibition in April. Looking forward to sharing pictures of all the processes as the collection evolves over the next couple of months in the studio.

As always, the Winter Collection contains some of the familiar forms I love and often return to. Sometimes I enjoy the attention to detail and deep concentration it takes to work on a small scale. I have made a group of individual Keeper vessels, each one with a tiny hand carved lid with its own drawn surface and textured surface from the soda firing. These little vessels are all about function in a conceptual way; by holding in cradled hands, they keep precious or intangible thoughts safe. My collection is now open on my website.

PREVIEW WINTER COLLECTION.
My online exhibitions show a snapshot of the ideas and threads that have been bubbling along in the studio. It can seem like a chaotic place where everything needs to happen at once. But making ceramics is a slow considered process. Porcelain demands patience and the soda kiln needs focus at every stage. Although this time of year feels frantic and unsettling, nothing in the studio can be rushed. I have put together a selection of pieces that are made with love, care and time. I hope that my work brings with it a moment of calm and quiet reflection. The preview is now open on my website.

SUMMER JARS | Online collection 2025.
Going live Saturday 26th July | 7pm UK time
For this summer exhibition I have been looking again at elemental jar forms that have played an integral and important role in domestic life across different cultures. But over time our need for these functional vessels has changed. I became interested in the idea of the jar as a container of space and how the interior volume can influence and expand the form. I have been working with a hybrid process of both throwing and hand building to evolve softer, more sculptural contours. Three of these summer jars will feature in the collection.
Celebrating summer, all the porcelain pieces in the exhibition have my signature copper blue, but also a gentle palette of smokey grey, flashes of heather pink, lemon and iridescent green from the soda firing. I hope it brings joy.
