PK Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications

PK Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications Discover an award-winning museum experience that explores the amazing story of our connected world 🌍 Everyone communicates.

The technology behind communication has shaped the world we live in. Mobile phones and tablets, fibre optics, the World Wide Web, radio and television would not have been possible without the development of the undersea telegraph and early wireless technology. We are here to tell this amazing story; from the first practical use of electricity to how we communicate today using high-tech fibre optic

cables that run under the world's seas and oceans. How cable communication and early wireless technology came to change everything about the way we live, work, and play.

A long time ago, in a valley far, far away…

Lord Vader oversaw the landing of the very first telegraph cable at Porthcurno in 1870, helping to connect the galaxy one message at a time.

May the Morse be with you. πŸ“‘

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of John Nash (1932–2026).

John joined Cable & Wireless in 1949, following in his father’s footsteps and went on to enjoy a remarkable career that took him across the globe. He was stationed in locations including the Azores, Portugal, Colombo, Port Sudan, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Freetown, Nairobi and Saudi Arabia. Between 1961 and 1966, he was based here at Porthcurno as an Assistant Engineer.

After retiring in 1983, John returned to Porthcurno and generously volunteered his time to help bring the museum to life. Thanks to John, and his brother-in-law Norman Ampleford, generations of visitors have been able to experience our original working telegraph machines in the WWII tunnels.

John was a true gentleman and a valued part of PK. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Please be aware that PK will be CLOSED to the public on Friday 1st May due to a private function.
