Today marked the last in-person session at The Bread Line in Penzance for our community-curated project with St Petrocs | Cornish Homelessness Charity

During the ten sessions our Programme Curator & Learning Lead Rebecca English and art fascilitator Theo Carter Webber have worked with St Petroc clients. Each week has begun in the same way: gathering around a table to share food, conversation and time together before exploring a selection of portraits from the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection.

After finalising the works from National Portrait Gallery, which will be on display at The Exchange next year, we enjoyed a visit back to The Exchange to look and engage with ZED LOVE by .

Huge thanks goes out to for facilitating in such thought provoking and engaging ways, to our funders of this project The Headley Trust and Penzance Council and our partner The National Portrait Gallery.

We can’t wait to share this exhibition with you in the Summer next year.

Every Tuesday, The Engine Room at The Exchange becomes a place to meet, make and connect. 🤝

Since 2019, this much-loved weekly programme has provided a free and welcoming space for older people who may otherwise experience loneliness or face barriers to taking part in creative activities. 💛

💷 Tea, Cake & Art costs more than £15,000 a year to run. Your donation, whatever the size, can help us keep the programme free for everyone who needs it. Our fundraising each year helps ensure the group can continue running the following year. 🌱

There’s growing evidence that taking part in creative and cultural activities can support our wellbeing as we get older. 🌿

“Newlyn Art Gallery has long been a source of inspiration for me and every time I visit I love the selection of ceramics in the beautiful shop.”

Today we celebrate Lucy Rutter, whose work we have been delighted to stock for just over a year. Her pieces have proved popular with our visitors and ceramic enthusiasts alike, and we are so pleased to continue sharing her beautiful work. ✨

After twenty years of self-taught pottery, in 2015 Lucy trained at Hilderstone in Kent, at St Faith’s in Maidstone, Morley College in London and finally at the The Leach Pottery Adult Education Programme.

Lucy has exhibited in The Picture Room in 2025 alongside her husband where their works circled around each other, sharing concerns with formal elements and colour combinations.

On our shelves at Newlyn Ary Gallery you will find Lucy’s classic Tondo Sets and her most recent Teapot Sets, glazed using the traditional Chinese Tenmoku method. 🍵

Our full range of Lucy Rutter ceramics is available in the gallery shop at Newlyn Art Gallery and through our online shop.

We’d also like to thank Lucy for her wonderful designs, which have often featured in our window displays — effortlessly complementing every season and showcasing the versatility of her work. 🌿

Libita will explore writing with notes as an embodied, exhibition-making process, followed by an in-conversation with sound artist Neil Rose, who worked with Libita on the realisation and composition of the exhibition’s sound work.

Meet Daniel Garland, the chef behind FIG at The Exchange in Penzance.

💚We’re thrilled to have Danny bringing all of his chefing experience, curiosity and passion to FIG at The Exchange FIG @ The Exchange. Have you been yet?

Born in Penzance in 1990 to artist Tessa Garland, Danny’s love of food started early. At just four years old, Danny’s Auntie, who ran restaurants in Falmouth, tried to offer him fish fingers while everyone else tucked into a seafood platter. He cried and insisted on having the crab and lobster instead. Much to everyone’s amazement, that was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with good food. 🦀

Danny moved to London at 11, returning to Cornwall every summer to work in his auntie’s restaurants — starting, as so many great chefs do, as a pot wash.

After leaving school, he knew the kitchen was where he wanted to be, drawn to what Anthony Bourdain described as a world of “misfits, outlaws, and intense specialists.”

From those early days, Danny worked his way through some of London’s brilliant kitchens, including Launceston Place, The Orrery, Le Café Anglais and Theo Randall at the InterContinental London Park Lane — so keep an eye out for his fresh pasta events. 🍝

He later joined Ottolenghi’s fire and fermentation-focused restaurant Rovi, where he became Senior Sous Chef and developed his skills with live-fire cooking and bold, internationally inspired flavours.

Danny had always dreamed of moving back to Penzance, and in 2021 he did just that with his wife Jenny and their son Otis. He went on to spend four years as Head Chef at The Old Coastguard in Mousehole, building relationships with local farmers, artisan producers and fishermen and developing a deep connection with the incredible produce on Cornwall’s doorstep. 🌊🌱

The menu is ever changing - at FIG you can expect fresh seasonal small plates, mouthwatering sarnies, delicious pastries and soft serve ice cream piled high with homemade toppings. 🍦

Sitting somewhere between painting and printmaking, the works features hairy, drippy, lozenge-shaped forms that hover between abstraction and something more bodily or animal.

As a Cornwall-based multidisciplinary artist, Alice Mahoney (Alice Mahoney) works across sculpture, sound, film, painting and printmaking. Her process-led practice explores material, form and the relationships between bodies and their environments, with a playful and experimental approach to making.

We are pleased to present Alice Mahoney’s series of monoprints and small ceramic sculptures, first shown as part of Soft Ruins in 2025. 🖼️

You may also remember Alice Mahoney’s Water Bodies, a documentation of lost water sites and participatory walks in and around Camborne, which was presented earlier this year on The Ramp Wall at The Exchange. 🌊

This season, Mahoney joins SHARP in The Picture Room at Newlyn Art Gallery, bringing together two distinct but complementary bodies of work exploring identity, landscape, material and the body. ✨
