Why I make? Next March Meet the Maker. My favourite thing of all is designing, making shapes and line work. To create something really economical and makeable I find so satisfying. And finding a beautiful line or curve is best of all. I always have more ideas than I can follow through with. That's the down side.

Here is what I make - next step on . A miriad of birds, animals, marine and Cornish inspired decorations as well as angels and other Christmasy things. All designed by me and handmade in ceramic. Most of them are painted on both sides, which most people don't do. Always got new ideas percolating away.

March Meet the Maker -Trial and Error. This is probably a big section because so much with pottery is problem solving I find! Here are pictures of colour trials. Especially trying to get a bright blue and just the right green. Colours fire differently to when painted, so experience is paramount as I am painting a bit blind.

At the moment I am trying out different clays to hopefully find one that fires whiter. The clay I use at the moment fires very cream, which tones down the blue. I could use porcelain but because the firing is so much higher it takes a big toll on the kiln. So trialing different earthenware clays at the moment.

Other difficulty is I can't fire a handful of pieces but need to fill the smallest kiln, which at times means a long wait before they can be glazed and fired. So frustrating.

As I say, lots of problem solving. Thanks to for the opportunity to sit down and think about these things.......

Just starting March Meet the Maker and my fridge magnet from Lightning Laser has arrived.

To introduce myself. I am Gemma, one half of Pendeen Pottery, with my husband John. But I am going to concentrate on the work I do. John is a pottery thrower and I hand make hanging decorations, so we make very different things.

Here is me in my area of the pottery, in all its chaos! I am fettling some Cornish mines that are raw clay and have now dried to leather hard, meaning they can now be handled easily and cleaned up.

The last picture is of decorations after their first firing and painting, waiting to be glazed and fired again.

The decorations with the fridge magnet are a new idea using Cornish words, which is apt for today as it's St.Piran's day today. The saint of Cornwall. Happy St.Piran's Day.
