Following an inspection by North Yorkshire Council, the council-owned Grosmont footbridge has been closed to allow emergency repair work.
The council's decision is unrelated to work being carried out by The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) on Bridge 42, which is proceeding to plan.
As a result of the closure of the footbridge - which is between Grosmont Signal Box and the tunnel leading to our MPD (Motive Power Depot) - we have had to unfortunately cancel upcoming Shed Tours (customers are being contacted with options to rebook or refund).
Ensuring the absolute safety of our visitors is of paramount importance at the NYMR.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and hope to resume Shed Tours as soon as possible.
⚠️ Grosmont suspension bridge closed
Following a recent inspection, we have taken the difficult decision to introduce an emergency closure of the Grosmont suspension bridge.
Specialist contractors found structural issues on the underside of the bridge that have rapidly deteriorated since its last inspection and are now affecting the support it provides.
We appreciate the impact this will have on the community, so we are urgently exploring options to install a temporary footbridge and will provide updates as soon as possible.
