Polegate Windmill

Polegate Windmill Polegate Windmill was built in 1817 and powered by wind until 1942. Restored in 1965 with internal machinery intact.

Polegate Windmill was built in 1817 and worked by wind up until 1942, then electrically driven to one set of stones until 1962. Heritage Lottery funded repairs to brickwork and cap carried out in 2004/5. Sadly, the timber supports in the tower are in a very poor state and most of the floors are now supported on Acrow props. This means we cannot allow any public access to the tower but the mill museum on the ground floor is still open to visitors.

Willingdon/Polegate windmill AGM - 17th June 2026.
Hello all. For the notice of our members, our 61st AGM will be held at the mill on Wednesday 17th June at 11am.

Windmill Wednesday and there was lots going on. We had our usual canine visitors at the mill. Steve and Trevor were starting work on adding a 5ft gate to our 10ft gate to make it easier for vans and cars with trailers to get in and out of the plat.
I was putting out our two new ramps which were paid for by Stephen Shing's council ward grant. Luckily "tall Steve" came by on his mobility scooter and was able to try them out - all good I'm glad to say.
We were also given a cheque from Eastbourne historic vehicle club which we are very grateful for.

On Sunday 10th May we will be open along with all the other mills in Sussex. Come along and see us from 11am to 3pm. The Long Man morris dancers will be at our mill at around 1am to dance in the lane. There will be refreshments available for a donation, the mill museum will be open and you can look up through the three sack hoist hatches to see up inside our tower. Free to enter and we can tell you all about our 208 year old mill...
