TheGallery, AUB Innovation, and the Research and Development Office

Last week, we were delighted to host the book launch of Sharon Coyne at TheGallery.

The event was organised by AUB Innovation and our Research and Development Office at the University.

Sharon, who works locally with Vita Nova, has written “Theatre of the Lost and Found”, a book that tells the story of the Penwithen Boys project and highlights the power of drama intervention during a critical period in participants’ adolescence.

The book explores the impact of excluding young people from mainstream education and examines how they can respond differently in a drama-based environment compared with more formal educational or institutional settings.

It also reflects on the decline of drama education and raises important questions about access to applied drama projects.

Coyne shares her 17-year journey to reconnect with the boys involved in the project to understand what impact, if any, the experience had on their lives.

Through the authentic voices of the boys “now men” the book reveals how applied drama can have life-changing effects.

TheGallery working with BA (Hons) Textile Design and AUB's Alumni Office in partnership with Lush

This week, we welcomed back Emma Tardif, Gift Design Lead at Lush and an AUB alumna from BA (Hons) Illustration, for the “LUSH Knot Wrapping Workshop”, which took place in UH alongside our exhibition, “Creating a Knot Wrap Revolution: The Art of Passing Forward”.

The workshop was open to both staff and students.

Charlotte Hunt, exhibition curator and Lecturer on BA (Hons) Textiles Design, is also an AUB alumna of the Foundation Diploma and MA courses.

Charlotte invited our curator from TheGallery, Violet McClean, to take part.

Here is Violet with Emma, very much in the creative zone.

Before Violet specialised in curating, she also studied practice-based art and design courses, and the workshop brought her back to her art school days.

After the workshop, Emma carried out portfolio reviews with students from BA (Hons) Illustration. Our alumni continue to maintain strong connections with the University.

Title of work: Brasil with an S

Course BA (Hons) Creative Direction

From: Brazil

“I believe in the power of a good story. Whether told through speech, writing, sound, or visual production, a good story sparks interest and questioning.

It has the power to move, connect, inspire, and shape opinions and perspectives, which is what motivates my enthusiasm for Creative Direction.

Inspired by cultural and human studies, the work Brasil with an S is part of a movement that aims to counter stereotypes surrounding Brazilian culture.

When culture becomes aestheticised, the complexity and depth of our social narratives are often ignored and marginalised through international simplification.

This movement acts as a medium to bring protagonism and authenticity back to Brazilian communities.

Each poster draws visual inspiration from a soul or samba song and uses landscape collage (découpage) techniques, incorporating elements from Brazilian artists such as Portinari (Retirantes, 1944), alongside distinctive natural and social features from each region.

I hope that, through the combination of sound and visuals, it becomes possible to empathetically immerse, even if only for a moment, into the daily lives and worlds of these communities.”

Last week, The Gallery hosted “In Conversation with Professor Sir Peter Cook RA: Architecture, Creativity and New Insights”, an evening that brought together a full house from across the creative and architectural communities, including many students.

The atmosphere throughout the event reflected a strong sense of enthusiasm and engagement, making it a truly memorable and inspiring occasion.

Sir Peter’s connection with AUB spanned decades. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 2008, and in more recent years continued to contribute directly to the campus environment.

In 2016, his first completed building in the UK, the award-winning Drawing Studio, opened at AUB, followed by the Innovation Studio in 2021.

In conversation with Professor Christian McLening, whose leadership in design research, innovation, and curation continued to shape creative dialogue at AUB and beyond, Sir Peter reflected on his remarkable career, creative philosophy, and enduring influence on architectural thinking and practice.

The discussion also explored themes from his latest book, offering insight into its ideas, inspirations, and ongoing relevance.

Our exhibition "Peter Cook: Moves On from the Beach to City and Landscape" remains open until 21 May, so make sure to visit before it closes.
