We've recently acquired a significant piece of work by renowned English painter and printmaker, John Piper, thanks to the generous donations from our supporters 🎨🙌

The newly acquired gouache and collage on paper work, created in 1951, depicts Poole’s stunning Guildhall, although it was originally titled 'Customs House' by Piper due to the similarities between the two buildings’ entrances 🏛️

Throughout his career, Piper frequently returned to the landscapes and architecture of Dorset, with Poole and surrounding areas providing further inspiration for his atmospheric depictions of coastal scenery, ancient churches, and the rugged beauty of the English countryside 🏞️

It was acquired from Roseberys Auctioneers in London and will go on display in our new Ceramics, Art and Design Gallery once we reopen 👏

Have you bought all your Christmas goodies yet?! 🎅🛍️

With only two weekends left for Christmas shopping, we thought we'd share this item from the museum's archives - a receipt for the purchase of a Christmas tree for the museum 🎄

The tree was purchased from the local fish and poultry merchants F. Dibben & Sons in the 1970s, when Poole Museum relocated to the Guildhall 🏛️

Next Christmas, you'll be able to purchase a range of locally sourced gifts from our new museum shop 👏

This stunning piece by renowned sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, celebrates the town's deep connection to the sea - a theme that will be central to our new galleries when we reopen 🌊

We're celebrating all our amazing volunteers who give their time, passion, and skills to make a difference to our museum and the local community, on International Volunteer Day 💛

They play a vital part in the museum experience and undertake a variety of roles including unearthing history as collections and research volunteers, preserving stories as oral history volunteers, beautifying our spaces as gardeners and maintenance volunteers, and supporting us behind the scenes as admin volunteers amongst other important roles 📜🎙️🌿💻

They help us bring history to life and create a place where everyone can connect with culture and community - so a massive 'THANK YOU' to each and every one of you! ⭐

📜 'According to the custom of the town of Poole' 📜

Poole's Coat of Arms is a proud symbol of our town’s heritage. It was first recorded in 1563 and officially confirmed by the College of Arms in 1948, where the colours were recorded for the first time 🛡️🎨

This historic emblem reminds us of Poole’s incredible maritime history as our exciting redevelopment continues ⚓

Our Story

The Culture Volunteers Poole programme is run by the Culture & Community Learning Volunteer Manager for the Borough of Poole and a dedicated team of Volunteer Coordinators who are based at Poole Museum. Volunteering has long been a central feature of Poole Museum Service’s operations and longstanding volunteer groups have made the creation of the poolehistory web-site and the opening of Scaplen’s Court Garden possible. The present, broader programme originated in 2009 and was based from the start on best practice and partnering opportunities. There are now over 800 registered volunteers contributing across a wide area of activity to help make our cultural services excellent. In 2011/12 at least 4,000 volunteer hours were contributed to activities ranging from gardening to Twin Sails celebrations stewarding. The programme has now expanded to not only providing opportunities in Museums, but also Libraries, Sports and Recreation and Skills and Learning across Poole. You will gain so much by getting involved in our cultural activities such as life-long learning, work experience, making new friends and contacts and re-adapting to the work place.

We welcome everyone to come and experience Culture in Poole.
