Ynys Balast – Cei Balast
Roedd rhywun yn holi am Cei Balast. Mae gennym arddangosfa (yn cael ei huwchraddio ar hyn o bryd). Gadawodd y teulu Roberts oedd yn byw yn y tŷ tua 1910. Ganwyd o leiaf dri phlentyn i'r teulu ar yr ynys. Dyma'r lluniau o’r tŷ tua 1930

Gan fod yr allforion o Borthmadog yn llawer mwy na’r mewnforion dychwelai llawer o longau Porthmadog yn llawn balast. Ym 1862, pan wastatawyd y “Rotten Tare”, y man arllwys gwreiddiol ar gyfer balast, 18 troedfedd uwchben dwr isel, rhaid oedd ceisio safle newydd, a defnyddiwyd safle dywodlyd i’r dwyrain o afon Glaslyn. Yn raddol tyfodd ynys yno. Yn 1868 codwyd cei lle y dadlwythid y balast. Tri brawd, Joseph, John ac Evan Lewis, seiri longau a gwneuthwyr blociau, adeiladodd y cei ac a wneir atgyweiriadau pan fo angen . Ar rai hen fapiau fe'i gelwir Ynys Lewis
Byddai craen bychan symudol yn trosglwyddo’r balast i wagenni bychain a wthid ar hyd y trac i ben draw’r ynys. Codwyd tŷ ar gyfer gyrrwr y craen a’i deulu hefyd. Yn ôl y llyfr “Immortal Sails” hwn oedd y teulu Roberts. Gellir cael gafael ar gerrig o lawer rhan o’r byd ar Ynys Balast.

The Roberts family who lived in the house left about 1910.At least three children were born to the family.. Here is the house about 1930
Ballast Island / Ballast Quay
Because exports from Porthmadog exceeded imports many ships arrived at the port in ballast. In 1862 when the “Rotten Tare” (where South Snowdon Wharf is today), the original dumping ground for ballast, was levelled at 18feet above low water, a new site had to be found and a sandy site east of the Glaslyn was utilised. An island gradually developed here. In 1868 a wharf was built where the ballast was unloaded. Three brothers, Joseph, John and Evan Lewis, ship’s carpenters and block makers, built the wharf and maintained it. On some old maps it is called Lewis Island.
A small mobile crane transferred the ballast to small trucks which were manhandled along the track to the end of the island. A house was built for the crane operator and his family. According to the book “Immortal Sails” this was the Roberts family. Stones from many parts of the world can be found on Ballast Island.
