🪙 Hidden beneath HMS Victory for more than a century. Now on display for the first time.

Discovered beneath Victory’s foremast during The Big Repair, these coins were placed there by 19th-century shipwrights following a long-standing maritime tradition believed to bring luck and protection to the ship and her crew.

For more than 130 years, they remained hidden beneath around 50 tonnes of timber, rigging and history.

Now conserved and carefully examined, the coins offer a direct connection to the people who worked on HMS Victory long after Trafalgar, reminding us that her story did not end with Nelson, but continued through generations of sailors, shipwrights and caretakers.

Some discoveries change what we know. Others bring us closer to the people who came before us.

⚓ This is more than metal recovered from the sea.

This treadplate once formed part of HMS Wakeful, a destroyer lost during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940.

On 27 May, Wakeful rescued 631 soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk. On 28 May after taking aboard hundreds more men desperate to reach home, she was torpedoed during the return journey. Only one soldier and 25 sailors survived.

For decades, the wreck remained beneath the Channel.

Then in 2002, this treadplate was recovered, a small surviving fragment connected to one of the most dangerous rescue operations of the Second World War.

Objects like this carry more than history. They carry the stories of those who stood upon them.

Discover the story of HMS Wakeful and Operation Dynamo at Royal Navy Museums: Portsmouth.

🥵 Melting in the heat? Time to ship into somewhere cooler!

🪟 Open gunports + sea breeze = natural ventilation and airflow
⚓ Thick wooden hulls = insulation magic. Wood slows down the transfer of heat from outside.
🧊 Cold Holds. The lower decks and holds of ships were particularly cold due to their location below the waterline.

❄️ And if you really want to escape the heat? The Mary Rose Museum has climate control fit for preserving a Tudor warship.
