We’re delighted to announce our next show at Auction House, WHAT WAS I THINKING? an exhibition of work by Naomi Frears.

Private View : Friday 10 April, 6-9pm, all welcome.
Open : Saturday 11 April - 2 May, 11-4pm

Based in St Ives, Frears works across film and video, text works, printmaking, and painting. Her practice explores ambiguous gestures and forms of everyday choreography with poise and humour, alongside visual material drawn from cinema, old fashion and interiors magazines, and landscaped environments.

Nominated twice for the Film London Jarman Award, her work is in various public collections including the Government Art Collection and the Edinburgh Film Library.

Solo shows and film commissions include Night After Night, Kestle Barton, The Work (a film about artist Ben Sanderson) and solo show, The Days of The Future Stand Before Us, Harbour House Gallery, Kingsbridge, Devon. Men Falling (Artist Moving Image Commission, Exeter Phoenix) and In Other Words, a film commission for RAMM (Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter). She collaborated on Sound Solid Liquid Light (Two Queens Leicester) with Stuart Blackmore, Leila Galloway, and Alice Mahoney.

She is currently showing Cars and Girls (from a performance for 40 cars with DJ Luke Vibert made for Groundwork, an international art project in Cornwall) in DRIVE, a group show at Papple Steading near Edinburgh. She has taken part in several group shows, including Forced Collaboration (Georgia Gendall) and Second Hand (curated by Liam Jolly) at Auction House.

Thank you to everyone who came to Second Hand yesterday at the K9 Crusaders charity shop in Redruth. What an amazing day of community, intrigue, conversation and joy. The fact that it was all part of St Piran’s Day celebrations, with the town buzzing, made it feel even better, and we are - as always - proud to be part of this town.

AH was born out of two things: an absolute belief in contemporary art to challenge, inspire and educate; but also from being a Redruth born and bred project, and wanting to challenge the structures and systems that make the actual community of somewhere like here feel excluded, or like it’s not for them.

Yesterday was proof that art is 100% for everyone when those two things meet in a wonderful way. It entertained, inspired and bemused everyone who came into contact with it. As it should.

Thanks to all the artists for really going for it and trusting us with this one - it could have gone spectacularly wrong - but actually it’s opened up more thinking than it’s resolved - in a positive way - and once again proved that art really does have a superpower to create community, inspire, and allow us to have a laugh in the process.

Come join us for part two over the next two weeks when we take it back to the gallery. Let’s see what happens there, eh?!

Finally, MASSIVE thanks to Wendy End-bsl Carbis and the team at K9 Crusaders for being so up for this. Legends. We might have to do all our shows there!

**FINAL WEEKEND**

Don’t miss the final weekend of Standing in the Gap, a stunning exhibition by Matthew Wilson.

11-3pm Friday & Saturday, or by appointment at all other times (it coming down Mon AM, so shout if you want to try and catch it at any other time!!)

‘Standing in the gap’ includes a selection of recent works developed across Wilson’s fellowship year. By ‘standing in the gap’, we close it, exposing ourselves for the protection of something bigger than ourselves. In defence of impending weakness or danger, we are challenged to consider our legacy once more, both personal and cultural.

Matthew Wilson (b. 1997) is a visual artist working between N.Ireland and Cornwall, and is the current recipient of the Freelands Studio Fellowship at Falmouth University (2025–26).

Primarily working with the parameters of sculpture, installation, performance and drawing; much of Wilson’s practice maps place, landscape and people. Centring around intimate material processes, he develops a unique methodology responding to site specificity using slow and sustainable approaches.

An intertwining of personal and cultural narratives utilises storytelling to open dialogue between past, present and future. Works come to fruition through a variety of traditional and unconventional methods, working across mediums responsive to the needs of the work. Led by intuition and experience, the practice emerges from a process of accumulation - collecting, repurposing, archiving and re-contextualising. His own ever-changing material situations become mirrored in the critical transformative thread in the work’s production.
