FRAME OF THE WEEK | Museum-scale framing

Every now and then a project comes through the workshop that reminds us why clients trust us with their most ambitious work.

These two monumental paintings arrived at blackShed rolled in tubes, each measuring an impressive 2 metres square.

From there, every stage was made in-house. We manufactured bespoke heavy-duty stretchers, jointed and pegged for strength and stability, before stretching the canvases and fitting them into custom-made solid oak tray frames.

The frames were finished in an ebony stain, sealed and polished with beeswax. Unlike painted finishes, a waxed finish develops character over time and can easily be revived with a light buff, ensuring the richness of the timber remains for years to come.

At around 50kg per artwork, most of that weight is actually in the paintings themselves. Moving, handling and installing works of this scale requires specialist knowledge, careful planning and a healthy respect for gravity.

This pair leaves the workshop tomorrow and is another reminder that no matter the size of the project, the principles remain the same: craftsmanship, conservation and attention to detail.

We collect and deliver throughout the UK and are proud to offer these specialist services from our workshop in rural East Sussex.

Last chance to catch A21: Life on the Verge by - an exhibition of paintings, a result of time spent in forgotten places. Nessie has been noticing, documenting and highlighting what often goes unnoticed in our roadside verges.

The exhibition ends this coming Sunday, with special opening hours between 12am until 3pm, so if you’re out about why not pop by, meet the artist and there may even be a bit cake here as well… 👀 🍰

Our usual hours are Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Nessie Ramm / Plantlife walk and talk event on Saturday! It was a really lovely day of walking, noticing, shared discovery and unexpected conversations.

Participants and Plantlife Members walked from Robertsbridge Train Station to the gallery with the keen eyes and expertise of Matt and Cassie from Plantlife and Nessie too - drawing attention to the myriad of wild flowers and grasses that populate that route!
Locally foraged drinks and snacks back at the gallery, made by Joe Hendry (including elderflower cordial, made with elderflowers growing outside the gallery!) were enjoyed after the hot walk! Nettle pesto, homemade sourdough and asparagus purée were among the culinary delights.

Lorna, Nessie and Cassie then spoke about the exhibition, themes within it and the importance of wild plants in creating habitats for wildlife.

Nessie’s exhibition A21: Life on the Verge is on display at blackshed for one more week, don’t miss your chance to explore it for yourself!

The current exhibition at BlackShed, Nessie Ramm’s A21: Life on the Verge, has been timed to coincide with the campaign launched by encouraging gardeners to leave lawns uncut and allow wildlife to thrive undisturbed.

This Saturday 30th May, Nessie will be presenting a talk about her year-long residency exploring the hidden plant life along the A21 and the approach behind her work. We’ll also be joined by special guests from Plantlife, giving visitors the chance to learn more about their work and how to get involved.

Alongside the talks there’ll be local food, a drink or two, and plenty of opportunity to experience Nessie’s extraordinary exhibition. Everyone is welcome, come and support the event, the gallery, and the wider environmental work taking place around us.

Last Friday we proudly hosted year 3’s & 4’s from Bodiam C of E Primary School for a special workshop with Nessie Ramm, as part of her current exhibition with us, A21: Life On The Verge. During this outdoor session, the pupils created their own mini road signs, created in response to Nessie’s exhibition and also their observations from the local landscape; a walk around the fields and woodland surrounding the gallery. A brilliant morning was had by all!

The children’s beautiful road signs are now on display at blackShed, placed amongst wildflowers and grasses on our own verge! Don’t miss your chance to see them while the exhibition is on!

If you’d like to make your own rewilded road sign, we still have a few spaces on our upcoming workshop, this Saturday 23rd May, 2:00-4:30pm, £35pp. Book through our website, or contact Lorna at [email protected]

Next Saturday’s workshop with is fast approaching. Create your own painted metal sign for a garden or community space - either as a decorative piece or a simple way to protect areas of wild planting.

Working with enamel paint on aluminium, you’ll make a durable, weatherproof sign inspired by flowers and wildlife observed during a short walk in the green spaces around the gallery.

All materials are provided. You’ll be using weatherproof enamel paint, so please bring an apron or wear clothes suitable for painting.

Each participant will take home an aluminium sign (approx. 30cm diameter) mounted on a 1m wooden stake.

To book, visit theblackshedgallery.org.uk or send us a message on Instagram or Facebook.

blackShed wants to give a little shout out to Lorna Ough & Hazel Dowling and their recent performance, ‘Zugunruhe: in a fugue for five voices’ which formed part of Sculpture in the Garden: The Storytellers exhibition, curated by Iwona Blazwick and Katie Delamere, Curators Inc. in the grounds of Worcester College, Oxford. The exhibition is free to attend and runs until July 5th.

A special thanks also to Lauren Dyer-Amazeen for being part of the performance and to Lene Volhardt for choreography assistance!

“Hazel Dowling and Lorna Ough are East Sussex based visual artists for whom collaborative song-making and the co-creation of acoustic soundscapes open up the opportunity to learn about the many layers of intelligence that interconnect in landscapes. In this instance, they divert from the human-centric, towards an ornithological perspective on notions of borders, territory and the instinct to migrate. For the occasion of The Storytellers, time spent with Sussex Wildlife Trust and in dialogue with those tending to the college grounds, has given a deeper insight into the migratory flight paths of the Swift and House Martin, that find temporary resting points within the floodplain of Worcester College. ‘Zugunruhe’, a German term meaning the intense restlessness birds experience prior to migration, has been an anchor for their ethnographic, dialogic and archival research, extending their practice into a choreographed movement score, where animism becomes an agent for expanding notions of interspecies consciousness.”
