The Museum will be open this Sunday (18th October) from 12.30 until 3.30, as the Waverley is coming to Rothesay on her last sailing of the season. Gary has kindly offered to do this special opening and we hope to see lots of visitors popping in to learn more about Bute.

This Tuesday (6th of October) at 7.30, we begin the BMNHS lecture programme. Our first speaker is Scott McFie of Glasgow University, who will be talking about 'Fishing on Bute during the Age of improvement, 1750-1815'. The illustration is of Port Bannatyne during a later period. All Welcome.

The second Baird of Bute Society talk at the Museum will be on Wednesday 21st October at 4p.m. when Prof. Niamh Nic Daeid from the University of Dundee will talk about 'What is forensic science and how does it help justice?'. This will be a very popular event so admission will be by ticket only, as space is limited. Tickets (Free of charge) can be obtained from Print Point or Bute Museum.

Tomorrow is our last Sunday opening of the year. As from Thursday 1st October, we are on our winter opening hours. Thank you to all the volunteers whose help means that we can keep the Museum open every day during the summer and to Gary who does a lot of volunteering on top of his Custodian hours.

Professor Victoria Martin of the University of Edinburgh gave us a fascinating talk this afternoon about quarks, leptons, bosons and all that: Life at the LHC. She made a difficult subject much more accessible to the audience through superb illustrations and a fun delivery. Eleanor Campbell of the Baird of Bute Society has more exciting talks at the Museum lined up, including one next month on forensic science. Watch out for more information later

On Wednesday (23rd Sept) At 4 p.m. we will be hosting the Baird of Bute Society talk entitled 'Quarks, Leptons, Bosons and all that: Life at the LHC'

The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN, the European Lab for Particle Physics just outside Geneva, is the world's largest experiment. But why smash atoms together? What is the Higgs boson, and why do you need such a large experiment?

In this talk, Prof. Victoria Martin, Professor of Collider Physics, University of Edinburgh, will introduce the Higgs boson and the Large Hadron Collider and explain how Scottish physicists are collaborating with scientists from all over the world to understand the fundamental physics of the Universe.

We have just had another delivery of fossils. There is an interesting mix to add to our stock and some of the colours are quite stunning. We have flexicalymene trilobites, hematite ammonite pairs and fossil wood. All proceeds from the shop help to keep the Museum going.
