Bute Museum

Bute Museum is an independently run museum where visitors can explore the Natural and Historical Heritage of the Isle of Bute.

This is Independent Bookshop Week and we are so lucky, here on Bute, to have Print Point, our very own independent bookshop. Karen and Martin work closely with Bute Museum and we would like to thank them for printing and selling our publications. We are currently working together on an updated version of the Tramway Trail.

Rainy days make good Museum days. Many of our visitors enjoy sitting watching our loop of old photos of Bute from our Archives. Some have been known to sit and watch it through more than once. We also have a loop of Natural History photos in the other gallery, as well as the live feed from the osprey nest.

Our shop is a valuable source of income for the Museum. We have a superb stock of ethically-sourced fossils which make interesting collections or unusual gifts. Prices start at £1.50 for small fossils, making them ideal pocket-money purchases for children. We are happy for people to just visit the shop as every purchase helps the Museum.

We have the ship's bell and crest from HMS Rothesay. The former ship's crew are long-standing supporters of the Museum. We were delighted to receive another generous donation from them this week. Thank you so much.

We had two young volunteers, Matthew and Aren, getting some work experience in the Museum last week. They were both enthusiastic and helpful in carrying out all the tasks they were given.

We have a lovely display of wild flowers in the Natural History Gallery, thanks to our talented volunteers. We also have a Wild Flower walk tomorrow (Saturday 16th May). Meet at the parking area near the end of Loch Fad just before the Causeway at 10 a.m. Roger Co***rd will be leading a wildflower stroll towards Kean's Cottage. All welcome.

We had three tours and lots of independent visitors in the Museum from the Seabourn Ovation. Gary, Jean and I managed to answer all of their questions. It was great to meet so many people who were really enthusiastic about our collection

On Thursday and Friday of this week you will get a chance to see Dougie Vipond on BBC Landward's 'Bute Special'. (In the photo he is interviewing a stuffed squirrel at our Touch Table). He also interviewed Malcolm Newdick about the history of our red squirrels and Rebecca Synnott's genetic study. The programme is also available in iPlayer from Thursday evening.
