Rye Harbour Nature Reserve
Oil on board
Karl Terry hosted a paint out and BBQ with and their other halves last September. The BBQ was cancelled because of the heavy rain but Jo saved the day cooking up a great chilli which we all ate in their spectacular open plan kitchen/living room. Many thanks to Karl and Jo .

About to paint by the harbour then came the torrential rain. I could see from the weather app this was going to happen all day. Took refuge in a hide and painted Rye Harbour Nature Reserve from there. Even in the hide the rain was coming through the windows so painted from the back of the hide where it was dry. Only problem with that it was too dark. So I decided to premix my colours in the light then paint in the dark from the back of the hide. One of my better decisions.

Fairy Glen, Betws-y-Coed  – Day 5, 30th May

A3 oil on board

Final day of the London Plein Air Group trip to Wales.

Overcast and drizzle in the morning became sunny in the afternoon. Found a dry spot underneath the trees overlooking the river. I was working quite slowly and not making a great deal of progress. Decide to change tactics and painted fast and furious. Which was a lot more enjoyable than my more considered approach.

Newborough Beach – Day 4, 29th May
A3 oil on board

Extremely windy day 40mph winds. Normally this would be impossible to paint outside. Wandered round the beach and dunes to get a relatively sheltered spot. Could’t find one about to give up and go to the forest. Bumped into Oleg who persuaded me to join a group who had found a perfect sheltered spot nearby. Glad I did.

Started off with a pastel violet board thinking it would complement a high key sandy coloured painting. As there was nothing to draw as such, this was going to be about colour, mood, composition and mark making of course. So I took a few liberties by rearranging what was in front of me. So much so I moved my easel 15 metres to the right after two hours. Difficult to get gesture and movement into the painting as the sand got into the paint, and everywhere else, and made it stiff. However, the sand on the panting gives it verisimilitude and a sense of place.

Caernarfon Castle – Day 2, 27th May
The plan was to go to Llyn Ogwen in the morning and Caernarfon Castle in the afternoon. Llyn Ogwen was abandoned because of heavy rain and no cover. So spent all day at Caernarfon Castle. Tried to paint the castle under a tree but too much water landed on my palette and support. Tried to paint in monochrome to make things easier. Paint would stick to the canvas board. Gave up, wiped the board and went to the pub.

Snowdon view from The Cob at Porthmadog – Day 3, 28th May
A3 oil on board
I couldn’t go to Portmeirion with the London Plein Air Group because the village doesn’t allow dogs in. I took myself off to The Cob at Porthmadog which is about a few minutes drive away. Amazing view of the estuary and mountains. The sun finally came out, quiet and peaceful - idyllic.

I started off painting on a heavily textured gesso canvas board. After about an hour or so I realised this texture was hideous. Dumped that and painted on a regular board. The light and sky in the background kept changing so I settled for an overcast sky with sunlight hitting the mid ground. The foreground was a little plain so I tweaked it to make it work compositionally.

Dinorwic Slate Quarry – Day 1, 26th May

The first day of my week in Wales with the London Plein Air Group . Thank you Tushar and Carol for organising another fantastic week.

The weather started off dry but by lunchtime the rain descended. I managed to get cover with Willow the Lab under a tree. Didn’t realise sheep are none to keen on the rain as well. So there was a bit of a Mexican standoff. I used acrylics to get the general mood and then painted on top with oils. The acrylics ended up being completely obliterated by the oils. Not sure whether the acrylic underpainting was a waste of time or not.

My view of Dinorwic Slate Quarry was exactly the same view the contestants had to paint on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.

A3 oil and acrylic on canvas.
