How do words influence your daily life? Take a moment to consider, and you'll notice letters are everywhere, fundamental to every aspect of existence and interaction. They facilitate language and dominate our writing, we hope. What about penning a handwritten note to a friend this week? When did you last do that? The encounter with letters in stone reveals the transience of self and the fragility of human presence. The impressions we leave can be written in stone, letter by letter, chiseled with care and precision. I the book 📕 'Words Made Stone', a book featuring letters written between Lida Cardozo, a letter cutter, and Professor Marcus Waithe during the pandemic, paints a vivid picture of humanity's connection to this timeless craft and its impact on our daily experiences. 📕 Marcus Waithe & Lida Cardozo

Inspired by her late husbands legacy David Kindersley, Lida speaks about the point at which letter cutting and sculpture meet - where the inside and outside of existence are not opposites, but partners. Each carved line holds both presence and absence, shaping space as much as it shapes matter.

It’s in this meeting point- between what is seen and what is felt - that expression lives.

Annabel Wightman will be in conversation with Lida Cardozo this Saturday at 11am. To book your free tickets, go to event brite link below or in bio.

‘The Alphabeticians’ is a short documentary film about Lida Cardozo Kindersley and her team at the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop, who practise traditional craft techniques to create bespoke letterings in many materials, most famously carving inscriptions in stone. Over the decades, the workshop has produced thousands of works, ranging from private commissions to lettering for major public institutions including the British Museum, the V&A, the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey, and the iconic gates of the British Library.

There will be a screening of this film in conjunction with the Wightman Gallery’s Stone Exhibition.

“The place is visually gorgeous and intriguing, and the themes of the craft also drew me to this story: it makes us think about what legacies we leave behind. The brilliant team in the workshop make careful, beautiful marks to last in stone. They connect with a tradition that is millennia-old, and with a bit of luck, to a millennia-long future to come.”

Filmed across three years by Ross Harrison, ‘The Alphabeticians’ is a short documentary following the handover of the renowned Cardozo Kindersley Workshop from Lida Cardozo Kindersley to the next generation of master lettercutters.

There will be a screening of this film in conjunction with the Wightman Gallery’s Stone Exhibition.

“What’s absolutely vital to this workshop is to hand on — not just to be good at something — but to make other people good at it, too, so that it keeps going. The workshop is now the best it’s ever been. I think it’s just totally amazing.”

There will be a screening of this film in conjunction with the Wightman Gallery’s Stone Exhibition.
