Audley End is one of England’s grandest stately homes; in addition to the spectacular house, visitors today can explore the Victorian Service Wing complete with kitchen, laundries and a dairy. There's also the recently restored historic stables, complete with resident horses and Victorian groom.

🌷 One of the many jobs fulfilled by the Ornamental Team is ensuring that each week there is a vibrant display of flowers in the table vases across the two tea rooms in the main house! 🌷

This has been the practice for many years now and the team take it turns to attend to the task using seasonal cut flowers from around all the garden beds & borders!

Today peonies, irises nepeta and baptisia have been used. Past displays have included everything from alliums to zinnias and, last winter for the first time, dried flowers such as statice and helichrysums helped to keep the tea rooms looking at their best! 🌷✨️

Curious about LGBTQ+ history? Check out some of the most notable LGBTQ+ historical figures! 🏳️‍🌈✨️

Alan Turing (1912–1954): A pioneering British mathematician and computer scientist who cracked the N**i Enigma code during World War II. His work laid the foundations for modern computing, though he was tragically prosecuted for his homos*xuality in the 1950s.

Oscar Wilde (1854–1900): One of the most famous playwrights and poets of the Victorian era, known for The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde’s famous wit was matched by his unapologetic lifestyle, which tragically led to his imprisonment for "gross indecency."

King James VI and I (1566–1625): The monarch who famously commissioned the King James Bible. He had several well-documented, intense romantic relationships with male courtiers, most notably George Villiers, the Duke of Buckingham.

Alexander the Great (356–323 BC): The King of Macedon and one of history's most successful military commanders. Throughout his conquest of the known world, he had several significant male romantic partners, most notably his closest companion, Hephaestion.

🌸 The peonies at Audley End are at their best at the moment. Peony ‘Duchess de Nemours’ and ‘Felix Crousse’ on the Parterre are fully in flower and offering lots of scent for visitors. In the Kitchen Garden, our central path is a spectacle of pink and white. Pictured are Peony ‘A F W Hayward’ dating from 1901 and Peony ‘Antwerperi’ dating from 1939! 🌸

Come and enjoy them while they last 🌸✨️

⛲️ The fountain at Audley End is a fabulous center piece in the parterre garden! ⛲️

Around the 1830's, Richard Griffin, the third Lord Braybrooke, commissioned the garden's creation from landscape designer William Gilpin. Based on an eighteenth-century pattern book, this formal flower garden was designed to be admired from the first-floor rooms of the house. The fountain does need continual maintenance. Consisting of modern water pumps and pipes dating from the victorian era, it does provide unique challenges for the Garden team to maintain it as a captivating focal point of our historic landscape! ⛲️
