This half-term, come and play, move and rest in STUDIO DO with Leap Then Look!

Artist duo Lucy Cran and Bill Leslie have transformed our Foyle Studio into a playful, interactive space inspired by Barbara Hepworth.

In her St Ives studios, Hepworth kept her sculptures on plinths with wheels so she could move them freely. Taking these ‘dancing plinths’ as inspiration, Leap Then Look have created interactive artworks that invite visitors to touch, play and explore how our bodies interact with sculpture.

You can also discover a specially created film, shot in the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, featuring contemporary dancers responding to the shapes and forms of Hepworth's sculptures.

Gözde İlkin: Those Who Remember Their Births

The new installation takes its title from an ongoing series that artist Gözde İlkin began in 2021, wrapping stones collected on her travels in second-hand fabric — a way of recording the surface of the earth.

For this new commission, developed during a residency at Porthmeor Studios, İlkin transforms vintage family bedsheets into flowing, wave-like sculptural forms inspired by the coastline of West Cornwall.

"During my stay in St Ives, I began to build a personal archive from the stones and plants I collected along my daily walking routes, together with photographs recording the surface, folds and contours of the landscape." Gözde İlkin

Embroidered images drawn from archival photographs sit alongside contributions from local women, bringing together the lives, labour and communities that have shaped St Ives across generations.

Gözde İlkin: Those Who Remember Their Births is commissioned by Tate St Ives and supported by SAHA.

See it at Tate St Ives until 17 January 2027.

Join us for a performance in the gallery devised by artist duo Leap Then Look 💥

💃 Every hour on Saturday 24 October, from 12.00 to 17.00 at Tate St Ives, dancers will perform a new choreography created with dance-artist Becky Horne. It explores the shapes, weight and feel of the duo’s interactive sculptures through gesture, rhythm and voice.

The sculptures were inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s ‘dancing plinths’, the wheeled plinths she used to move her sculptures, and can be found in our October half term STUDIO DO, where visitors of all ages can explore how our bodies interact with sculpture.

🎟 Free with admission. Come for one performance or stay for the afternoon.

OPENING THIS SATURDAY 👀

St Ives, through Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s eyes.

From the harbour to the Cornish coastline, the place she called home became a lasting source of inspiration. Arriving in St Ives in 1940, Barns-Graham developed a way of looking at the world that went beyond what she saw. She described it as ‘looking in / looking out’.

Discover her work and her enduring connection to St Ives in Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, opening at Tate St Ives this Saturday 24 October.

Taking place at Tate St Ives this week ✨

Some of our galleries are closed until 24 October as we prepare for a major exhibition of work by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham but there is still plenty to see...

🔷 Explore Gözde İlkin: Those Who Remember Their Births, a one-room textile installation about stories of memory and belonging.
🔷 Make, play, and rest in STUDIO DO with Leap Then Look: The Shapes We Hold. An interactive exhibition featuring play-based activities that encourage self-directed art experiences for children, parents and carers. Until 8 November.
🔷 Tomorrow at 10:30 is Toddle Tate for under 5's and their carers. Explore the work of Leap Then Look through engaging with new ways of looking, making and thinking. Only £1 admission.
🔷 Discover displays drawn from the Tate Collection, exploring the artists and stories that made St Ives famous for art.
🔷 See work by Cornwall-based artist Ro Robertson, reflecting on the coastline as a place of creativity and connection. It leaves Tate St Ives soon!
🔷 Join a daily gallery talk on the stories of art on the Cornish coast.
🔷 At the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, join a daily talk where staff share stories about the artist, her work and the garden.
🔷 And don't miss our rooftop café that serves lunch, drinks and snacks with views over the bay. The shop next door stocks books, gifts and postcards inspired by artists and the local landscape.

On 16 March 1940, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham arrived in a wet and windy St Ives. She had travelled from Edinburgh College of Art on the advice of its Principal, who believed Cornwall would be good for her health and her art.

Within weeks, she had found a space overlooking the beach at Porthmeor Studios, where she painted for the next two decades. She met Barbara Hepworth soon after arriving and became part of a community of artists that included Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo and Alfred Wallis. Barns-Graham would return to St Ives throughout her life.

This autumn, discover the artist and her enduring connection to the town. Wilhelmina Barns-Graham opens at Tate St Ives on 24 October.
