Our Story 💌

To continue celebrating the history of Porthminster Gallery, today we're taking a look at David & Dee's third York gallery - Minster Fine Art.

From 2002 to 2007, Minster Fine Art was situated in David & Dee's home, The Old Convent, alongside York Minster.

This medieval/Georgian ten-bedroom former convent house to the Sisters of the 'Order of The Holy Paraclete' had evolved over six centuries. Built on the site of the Anglo-Saxon church and graveyard, upon the Roman fortress and basilica where Constantine was proclaimed Emperor of Rome in AD 306.

Our Story 💌

To continue ‘Celebrating 25 Years!’ here at Porthminster Gallery, we’re going to look back at its history, beginning at the dawn of the millennium!

In 1999, David and Dee opened their first art gallery in York - “The Adze Gallery”. Situated in one of the oldest shop buildings in Britain, a 14th-century artisan’s workshop along York’s historic Goodramgate. Sadly, no images of the shop or it’s exhibitions remain due to a theft of hard drives from its offices.

A new “Adze Gallery” was opened in Gillygate in 2002! An old retail shop was transformed into a high-street gallery with a walled sculpture yard; officially opened by the former Culture Secretary, Chris Smith.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in Porthminster Gallery’s history…

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS 🎊

Thank you to all that joined us here at Porthminster Gallery on Saturday to celebrate 25 years in business!

To commence our ‘Celebrating 25 Years’ show, we heard Gallery Directors, Dee & David, talk guests through the stories behind archival works of art, where their story as gallery owners began in York in 1999 as ‘Minster Fine Art’ and ‘The Adze Gallery’, before their relocation to St Ives as ‘Porthminster Gallery’ in 2007.

Visit the gallery to view selected works by the many artists we’ve represented over these wonderful 25 years. And keep your eyes peeled for some behind-the-scenes snapshots of hanging and curating this new show!

On this day we mark the passing of Alfred Wallis in 1942 ~ the acclaimed British artist heralded by the likes of Ben Nicholson for his self-taught ‘naive style’ paintings of port landscapes and marine scenes.

Born in Plymouth in 1855, Wallis alongside his brother and Father moved to Penzance - his Father’s birthplace. Wallis spent most of his life, not as an artist, but as a mariner, fisher, labourer, and marine stores dealer.

It wasn’t until his wife‘s death in 1922, when Wallis began to paint. Never receiving formal art training, Wallis was entirely self-taught and created seascapes, harbour-side scenes, and port landscapes in the ‘naive’ style using found materials.

Ben Nicholson, one of the first buyers of Wallis’ paintings, named Wallis’ art as “something that has grown out of the Cornish seas…which will endure.”

At Porthminster gallery we represent East Sussex-based ceramicist .barrell , whose red earthenware plates, cups, jugs, and bowls act as a homage to the paintings of Alfred Wallis. Swipe across to see Anne’s maritime-inspired vessels.

All and more are available on our website and in the gallery.

Today marks 19 years since the passing of Sandra Blow RA, one of the true pioneers of the British abstract movement of the 50’s.

David Durham, Porthminster Gallery’s Director, was privileged to know and represent Sandra from 2002, “We were the first commercial fine art gallery in the North to represent Sandra and her work, along with other St Ives and Cornwall-based names. Sandra was very vivacious and lived for, and loved, painting, we miss her greatly. Since her passing, we have continued to represent her wonderfully celebratory works to collectors and the general public alike. Sandra’s incredible skill as a colourist, and composer of beautifully crafted pure abstract compositions was, for me, unparalleled.”

We are thrilled to have a number of Sandra’s prints available at the gallery. Have a look online or in person.
