Salcombe Maritime Museum

Salcombe Maritime Museum "A veritable treasure trove of Salcombe's maritime past" The museum reopens this year on 1st April. Free entry

The harder you search the more you will find in this friendly little museum...... A treasure trove of models, paintings, photographs and artefacts which tell the story of Salcombe’s links with ships and the sea from ancient times to the Second World War. There is plenty to amuse and engage younger visitors including hands-on displays, models and pirates’ treasure, in the ‘young sailors’ corner’. T

he Museum has a unique gallery of paintings depicting the famed racing fruit schooners built in Salcombe during the 19th century. Today Salcombe is a fashionable yachting centre but traditional boatbuilding crafts are still carried on in the town and the Museum houses an impressive collection of tools that tell the story of these maritime trades. Finally, don’t miss the sea-bed treasures recovered by divers from the hundreds of shipwrecks that line our coast. Salcombe Maritime Museum is open every day from 10:30am - 12:30pm, and then again from 14:30pm - 16:30pm, April - October.

Do you recognise anyone?

It’s a bit damp outside so we are taking the time to enjoy pictures like this one of Maypole dancing in Cliff House Gardens.

Volunteers Needed!
We are seeking people with an interest in local history to join our existing team and help keep the museum open 7 days a week. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our little museum and the more hands we have on deck, the more we are able to showcase Salcombe's history.
Most volunteers commit to between two and four shifts a month and each shift lasts only two hours. So, if you can only spare four hours a month we'd love to have you on board. You’ll get to meet lots of interesting people and enjoy learning all about Salcombe’s rich maritime heritage. Training will be given so you don’t need any prior knowledge.
If you would like to get involved, please contact us by email at [email protected].

A huge thank you to Salcombe C of E Primary School and Young Salcombe Centre who coauthored '50 things to do in Salcombe' with the museum. These fantastic ideas have kept us busy through winter. We've ticked these off in the last few weeks:
10. Eat some ice cream (apparently its never to cold)
13. Enjoy the environment and lovely people- the MAD panto was a great opportunity for this!
46. Watch or play some rugby- @ Salcombe Rugby Football Club
30. Rock pooling- and spotted a snakelocks anemone

Our new Virtual Museum

The first two albums in our exciting new online Virtual Collection have been added to our website at: https://salcombemuseum.org.uk/museum-guide/virtual-collection/ (Guide page, then Virtual Collection). The work on preparing the Virtual Collection has been undertaken as part of our National Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Dynamic Collections Project’. Over the last year or so we have been progressively digitising the objects in our collection and creating object data sheets for posting in albums. The first two albums are: ‘Wreck and Rescue’ and ‘The Jack Needham ‘Ship in a Bottle’ Collection’. When selected, the albums open in Google Photos. Over the coming months we hope to build up the collection with many more albums providing a unique and easily accessible educational resource.
