In the later years of her career, Joanna Still focused on smoke fired vessels. The largest of these could come in low or taller form factors, as shown here, as well as smaller bowls and pots.

Professor Simon Olding said of them, "The intense colours are counterpointed with the chalky, soft light of Wiltshire...a suggestion of place, or maybe gestures of nature trapped by the ring on the walls of the low-fired pots."

See these pieces and a wide range of Joanna's earlier glazed work in our current retrospective exhibition of her work.

These are just a few of the beautiful smoke fired pieces by Joanna Still in our current retrospective exhibition of her work.

The exhibition charts Joanna's journey as a maker, starting with her glazed work from the 1980s – intricately decorated plates, bowls and jugs – to her later smoke fired vessels.

A video by John Gillett from 2002 shows Joanna at work while a photographic timeline examines Joanna's wide and varied experiences and creative influences.

Make sure to visit to see this wonderful collection.

FORTHCOMING EXHIBITION: Beth Shapeero | Hot Excitement

We're thrilled to announce our next exhibition, a solo show by Glasgow-based artist Beth Shapeero.

Hot Excitement marks Shapeero’s first solo exhibition in England since 2012. Based in Glasgow since relocating in 2011 to undertake a Masters at the Glasgow School of Art, Shapeero’s practice has undergone a significant expansion in recent years, driven in part by access to large-scale temporary studio spaces.

The exhibition brings together a selection of recent paintings and large-scale works on paper made during an especially prolific period of making. Currently working from an abandoned 1990s office building on the outskirts of Glasgow, Shapeero has, for the first time in her twenty-year career, had the space to work across multiple large canvases simultaneously. This shift has transformed her relationship to painting. Earlier attempts at canvas often felt constrained by the surface’s expense and perceived preciousness; the freedom to work expansively, quickly, and without overprotection has allowed a new looseness and confidence to emerge.

Beth Shapeero (b. 1985, Nottingham) is a painter and printmaker. Her practice explores sensation, memory and the body through abstraction. She works across painting and printmaking, often combining the two to produce works that emphasise process, materiality and scale.

Shapeero is one half of the collaborative duo Two-Step, alongside artist Fraser Taylor. Together, they challenge the boundaries of printmaking through large-scale, dynamic installations. She is also co-director of the artist-led gallery ShapeeroMurray, working to support artists in a fragile arts economy.

Portrait shows Beth at her recent show at Art Fair Daegu, South Korea.

'Against a quiet sky' is just one of 32 outstanding paintings in David Mankin's solo exhibition, PORTALS.

We've been thrilled with the reception for the show, with visitors travelling from far and wide to see David's work in person.

Perhaps this comment sums it up best: "A feast for the eyes!"

With four full days of the exhibition to go, there's still time to plan your own trip. And if you're thinking of coming on the closing day, Saturday 16 May, David will be here between 12:30 – 2:30pm, so come and say hi then.
