INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS
Tom Cartmill

Originally from Greater Manchester, Tom Cartmill has spent much of his adult life overseas, with years in New Zealand and more recently, in Southern Spain and Sicily. His time in Southern Europe, where he became interested in the Moorish heritage, in particular the underlying ideas and artistic principles, has been a major influence on his work. Now settled in the UK, he works from a farm-based studio outside Reading in SE England, from where his sculptural drawings and mixed media work are gaining increasing recognition.
Tom exhibits widely and regularly, some of his more notable exhibitions include the Derwent Art Prize (London & Paris), The Royal Scottish Academy; The Royal West of England Academy; The Royal Academy, London. In 2017, he won Rabley Gallery’s Editioning Prize, seeing the development and launch of a print edition at the London Original Print Fair at The Royal Academy of Arts, in 2018.

- INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS
Roger Stephens
Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors

Roger and Studio53 have had a healthy relationship from when the gallery started. With years of skill and knowledge as a stonemason for Salisbury Cathedral Roger moved away from there and started exploring sculpture.
With a profound empathy for the media Roger carvers the stone producing beautiful shapes inspired by nature, urban surrounding’s, politics and topical narrative.

After nine years I left the Cathedral to become a full-time sculptor.
My work is mainly in stone, occasionally incorporating iron and stainless steel, materials I feel are elemental, hard and uncompromising. This is fundamental to my work. Wherever the idea comes from, natural forms, heavy industry, words or politics, I strive to imbue the piece with an elegant solution.
It is important to me that the viewer feels invited to touch, to feel the contrasting textures, to engage with the physical form as well as the intellectual idea. There is a continuous process of exploration, of developing ways to interpret ideas, to challenge the commissioner and viewer.

INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS
Richard Slee

Introducing sculptor Richard Slee, London based artist Richard has worked with Studio53 on a few independent projects. He has a refined and clear view on how he uses his materials, mostly encapsulating his thoughts and designs in resin.

My work grew from an interest in the Afrofuturist Music of Sun Ra and his ‘Cosmic Philosophy’. He claimed an alien abduction to Saturn as a consequence he created some strangely beautiful music from beyond, binding myths the cosmos and all kinds of possible realities.

Having experienced the unnerving world of sleep paralysis, I have sought to formulate and develop my own interpretation of what otherworldliness might be.

I work with modular forms, stretching and transforming material properties, looking to accentuate their strengths. Many individual elements are combined incorporating mechanical and organic forms coexisting harmoniously, suggesting resemblances from planetary to molecular.

To find out more info about Richard and his artwork go to our website.

INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS
Kate Henderson

Kate grew up in Dorset and moved to London as a teenager, later returning to the countryside, where she has been based in West Sussex for the past 30 years. Living close to the rolling downs, ancient trees, and the sea has made her deeply aware of materials shaped by time and weather. She is inspired by naturally worn forms — driftwood, sea-worn pebbles, fallen branches, and other quietly eroded remnants — where beauty emerges through use, exposure, and gradual change, a process she calls design by nature.

Although she has always made things in three dimensions, sculpture initially existed alongside a career as a creative consultant, designing large-scale, site-specific installations for museums, hotels, restaurants, and premium retail spaces internationally. This work honed her lateral thinking, problem-solving skills, and an ability to embrace constraints and imperfections.

NTRODUCING THE ARTISTS
Jay Battle

Jay Battles relationship with Studio53 is new, though we have been admiring his sculpture from near and afar for many years. His quality of carving, construction and visual narrative is sublime.

My language in sculpture is informed by the relationship between our built and natural environments. This reflects an ability to reorder a natural arrangement of materials as I see our ability to reorder our natural environments to our advantage.
The main aesthetic in the work is the continuity of line. This may be represented in the overall shape of the work or in the detail of the imposed structure or impressions I apply to it.

- INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS
Julia Atkinson

Julia Atkinson has a strong history using geometric shapes and layering within her screen prints, she is also aware of the process of her earlier work had on the environment. Julia’s relationship with Studio53 comes from exhibiting with us in a mixed exhibition called ‘Time Trace’ with artists Prudence Maltby and Linn O'Carroll in September 2016.

Although my work looks contemporary, it was actually done 50 years ago.
From 1960 I studied at Canterbury College of Art, (now Kent Institute of Art) for 4 years and then became a part-time teacher there. During this time, I applied to the Slade in London and got another 4 years as a postgraduate student. It was here that I started colour exploration, following the ideas of Josef Albers and Bridget Riley. Screen Printing was a new process and an ideal technique for applying flat colour. I was the first student at the Slade to use it.
