Land of Iron A state-of-the-art visitor attraction exploring the industrial heritage of Teesside. Open now. He collected all the memorabilia he could.

Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is an independent museum celebrating the heritage of the ironstone mining industry. In the 1950s, whist reporting on the ironstone mine closures, Tom Leonard, a local newspaper reporter, became acutely aware remains of the ironstone mining industry were rapidly being lost. In 1978, the Museum was founded to house Tom’s collection and to celebrate the legacy of the industry through the preservation, conservation and display of related artefacts, photographs and documents.

This Sunday, Northern Rocks Vintage Vinyl at Kiwi Trading are bringing their Record Fair to Skinningrove, with dealers from across the North East selling vinyl albums, singles and CDs across a wide range of genres.

And there’s an extra reason to come along...
🏛️ Land of Iron will also be open for museum tours.
We haven’t routinely opened on Sundays for years, so this is a rare chance to visit the museum at the weekend too.

⛏️ DR STEVE SHERLOCK RETURNS TO LAND OF IRON

If you've heard Steve speak at Land of Iron before, you'll know just how much knowledge and enthusiasm he brings to the archaeology of our area.

On Friday 16 October, he returns for the latest in our Tom Leonard Lecture Series, this time sharing the results of the 2026 excavations at Street House.
It's been another fascinating season of digging.

Steve and the team have been investigating an enormous stone cairn, around 17 metres across and believed to date from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. More than 150 flint tools have been recovered, alongside charcoal deposits and evidence that is helping to build a picture of this remarkable prehistoric landscape.

And there are some newly discovered Roman finds to hear about too.
Come along and hear about the discoveries from the archaeologist who's been there uncovering them.

🪨 WHAT HAS BEEN UNCOVERED AT STREET HOUSE?

This summer, archaeologists excavating at Street House uncovered an enormous stone cairn dating from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age.

Around 17 metres across and made up of thousands of beach pebbles, the site has also revealed more than 150 flint tools, burnt charcoal deposits and more clues to thousands of years of activity in this remarkable archaeological landscape.
Now Dr Steve Sherlock returns to Land of Iron to share the latest results from the 2026 excavations.

As part of our Tom Leonard Lecture Series, Steve will explore the newly uncovered cairn, how it compares with previous discoveries at Street House, and what the finds could tell us about the people who created these monuments.

And the prehistoric archaeology isn't the whole story. There are newly discovered Roman finds too!

Have you ever found an old clay pipe?

Maybe a broken white stem in the garden, a fragment on a footpath, or a bowl picked up while walking somewhere familiar.

One of our volunteers, John, recently found this decorated clay pipe in the Guisborough area and donated it to Land of Iron. At first glance, it looks like another familiar Victorian find. Look closer, though, and it carries the words “ITALY’S HERO” and “LIBERTY”, alongside a portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

That small object opens up a much bigger story about Victorian popular culture, political heroes, everyday smoking and the clay pipes that still turn up all around us today.
