On Friday, 29 May 2026, the Rural Task Force visited North Lincolnshire Museum to speak to colleagues about our involvement with Heritage Crime across the region. All our officers are trained in many areas of policing but this is another specialism we carry as a team after training from Historic England.

We investigate all reports of illegal metal detecting, often referred to as "Nighthawking" where people will illegally search for and remove archaeological artefact's and antiquities from the ground.

This often leaves dozens of holes across land, damaging or destroying crops. The items are then sold on the black market or online auction sites.

This is straight up theft and not only does it cause damage it also affects our heritage and history.

Thank you to staff at North Lincolnshire Museum for having us and helping us to expand our knowledge on the subject.

If you want to know more about the and the work we do, come down to Messingham Show on Saturday, 6 June 2026 where we will be exhibiting our work.

Sonic archaeology?

This object is made of copper alloy and is identified as a tuning peg for a post-medieval stringed musical instrument.

The tapered pin at the base of the peg fitted a hole drilled in the body, head or neck of the instrument.

The flat handle permitted tuning by turning the key, probably manually, to tighten or loosen strings.

Traces of the strings, which were made of twisted ‘cat gut’ (actually cattle or goat gut), hair, or metal wire, appear as grooves in the tapered base of the peg.

Strings made from organic materials were sensitive but needed frequent tuning as atmospheric conditions would alter the sound they made.

Techniques for making drawn metal wire were recorded from the 12th century. Metal strings are less liable to go out of tune, and some instruments were made to use them.

Musical instruments were played in the home as well as in public and for dances and religious services.

Supply taps from gas-burning appliances are sometimes mistakenly identified as tuning pegs. Gas taps have thicker dished oval handles and lack any signs of stringing.

Coal gas supply enjoyed a surprising reach from the mid-19th century to the later 20th. Taps from gas pokers or ovens are quite common finds from even isolated rural locations.

🚨 LAST CHANCE TO VISIT 🚨

Leaving on the 4th June

It’s been 30 years since Humberside was officially abolished in 1996, but for many, the memories, stories, and identity still remain. This special exhibition looks back at the creation, life, and legacy of Humberside, exploring how it shaped communities across the region and what it meant to the people who lived and worked there.

Discover fascinating photographs, documents, and personal stories that bring this unique chapter of local history back to life. Whether you remember Humberside first hand or are curious to learn more, this exhibition offers something for everyone.

This exhibition will re-open at Scunthorpe Central Library on 5 June.

Today we commemorate 52 years since the Flixborough Disaster.

Two years ago, the museum developed an exhibition centred on the event. Nearly 400 items were donated, including photographs, documents, letters and ID cards. Importantly, we also collected 200 personal memories shared by members of the public. This remarkable archive represents an important part of North Lincolnshire's history.

Fossil Friday
This specimen contains a tiny fossilised fish scale, which can be seen indicated by the black arrow. It was found in the Aymestry Limestone in Shropshire. The Aymestry Limestone formation was laid down in a warm shallow sea during the Silurian period, between 423 and 419 million years ago.
