The Folly Museum and Coffee House, Settle

The Folly Museum and Coffee House, Settle The Folly is Settle’s only Grade I listed building. It is home to the Museum of North Craven Life. TripAdvisor Travellers Choice winner 2022.

The Folly, built in 1679, is home to the charity-run Museum of North Craven Life and our licensed Coffee House. On 10th May 2023 our Coffee House was named as The National Museum Cafe of Year at The Museum and Heritage Awards ceremony in London. All the proceeds from our coffee house go towards the maintenance of our stunning 17th century building. We serve a selection of artisan coffees and teas

from Atkinsons of Lancaster and we are delighted to serve beers from North Riding Micro Brewery based in Snainton near Scarborough. We have a tasty selection of sandwiches and salads and delicious piping hot homemade soups. Meat is sourced from our local butchers Drake and Macefield and we serve artisan bread from Seasons bakery in Ingleton. Our cakes are mostly all homemade and our Folly Scallywags are to die for! Our afternoon teas are very popular and require 24 hours notice (booking is essential)

We are dog friendly and have disabled and buggy access via the side of the building (the main entrance does have four 17th century steps).

The Folly is changing shape a little more every day.

This latest timelapse shows the scaffolding continuing to spread around the building as work moves into its next phase.

It’s strange seeing familiar views slowly disappear behind poles and platforms, but there’s also something fascinating about watching the process unfold piece by piece.

For generations, people in Settle have known The Folly exactly as it stands today. For a short while, it’s going to look very different.

But all of this careful work is about ensuring the building has a strong future.

The Folly Coffee House remains open as usual, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm ☕

The Museum of North Craven Life is closed until Summer 2026 while work continues on site.

Inside The Folly is one of its most remarkable surviving features - a huge ground-floor fireplace with an unusual stone arch.

The arch is made from “joggled voussoirs”, which means the stones interlock with notches to help make the structure stronger. The central keystone has two notches, allowing the pattern to mirror on both sides.

It’s a lovely reminder of the skill and thought that went into The Folly’s construction.

Whether you are meeting up with friends or just want a quiet drink, our Coffee House is the ideal choice. Make yourself comfortable in what was the kitchen of the Folly's 17th century building. It might not look very appealing from the outside at the moment due to essential restoration work but it is still inviting inside.
We serve delicious food, excellent Atkinsons Coffee Roasters coffee and provide a warm welcome.

On our specials board today we have:
Homemade Spanish omelette served with salad,
Cream cheese and bacon bagels,
Brie pear and thyme panini,
Hummus and roasted red peppers on Ambry Bakery sourdough toast,
Breakfast ciabatta with Bury black pudding, bacon and egg.

Vegan white chocolate and raspberry cake,
Gluten-free lemon meringue,
Homemade Victoria Sponge and raspberry and vanilla scones.

After our earlier post about The Folly being “capricious and wilful”, we thought we’d look a little closer at one of its most striking features - the windows.

The ground-floor windows are remarkable not just for their shape but for the way they wrap around the corners of the house, creating an almost continuous wall of glass.

For a building of this age, it feels wonderfully bold.

It also tells us something about Richard Preston, who built The Folly in the 1670s. Light seems to have mattered to him. A lot.
