Curated by Hayley Weeks
Curated by Hayley Weeks, 'Up, Down, Side to Side' at Bloc Projects, Sheffield is an interactive exhibition featuring new work from Technical Sculptor Timothy Holt. Bloc Projects is transformed by two new installations from Holt, 'Art. no. 373 - 396 (Going Around In Circles)' (201
5) and 'Art. no. 400 - 499 (What Goes Up)' (2015). Constructed from chrome spring doorstops the work encapsulates the pure properties of these everyday household objects, drawing on our understanding of the mundane. By using a naturally animated object, Holt invites the audience to experience this recognisable item anew through an instinctively playful interaction. The clean and direct formation of the work only acts to enhance its accessibility, as simplistic and familiar forms, to engage the viewer with Holts’ installations and the space alike. To accompany his solo exhibition, Holt has handcrafted a series of limited edition pencil on hardboard prints. 'Art. no. 501 - 505 (Around In About)' (2015) is a collection of five individual works that explores the effect of art making. These numbered originals have been hand produced by the Technical Sculptor making each one simultaneously a duplicate of the others, as well as a unique work in their own right. The prints have been signed and numbered by the artist and are available for purchase with a signed certificate at Bloc Projects. Timothy Holt (b. 1988, lives and works in Guildford) received a BA in Fine Art from University for the Creative Arts in 2011 and completed a short course in Art History, Criticism and Curating at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2014. Recent solo exhibitions include 'Here, There and Duracell', Six and LUNG project space, Bournemouth (2014) and 'Work to Wickes', HOUSE, London (2014). Recent group exhibitions include 'POP up F*CK off', Broadway Studios, London (2015); 'Another After', Great Western Studios, London (2015); 'Fresh Is More', APG Gallery, Sheffield (2014); 'Lost Storage', Mori and Stein Gallery, London (2014) and 'Chinese Open: Year of the Horse', Q Park Chinatown, London (2014).
