Sherborne Museum

Sherborne Museum We are a vibrant, community-based museum situated in the heart of Sherborne. Out of hours visits can be arranged by appointment.

We are a vibrant, community-based museum entirely run by volunteers for the purpose of preserving and displaying items of local heritage. The first museum of its type in Dorset to become fully accredited, it was founded in 1968 by members of Sherborne Historical Society and now occupies a Grade II listed building, the Gatehouse and Almonry of the former Benedictine Abbey, conveniently placed in th

e centre of town close to other buildings of historical interest. Our collections illustrate the geological, historical, social and industrial development of Sherborne and the surrounding villages, as well as their natural history. Highlights include a unique medieval wall-painting, an intriguing 17th century puzzle box, a touch-screen version of the fabulously illuminated Sherborne Missal, tools of forgotten trades and agricultural practices, silk and gloving displays, the exquisite early paintings of Edwardian botanical artist Diana Ruth Wilson and a famous doll’s house. Our photographic collection, together with our postcards and paintings form one of the largest private collections of images of a small town anywhere in the country. Many of these images are currently being placed on a computerised database for easy access by the public and for reproduction if desired. We want children to enjoy our Museum and aim to have a corner in every room with child-friendly exhibits, handling boxes and dressing up opportunities. We organise family-oriented events and workshops and have signed up to the “Kids in Museums” manifesto, pledging to listen to what children say they want to see and do and act upon it. We have strong ties with local schools, who put on their own annual exhibitions at the Museum and we actively encourage school visits and students needing work experience. In 2012 we were awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge which guarantees a safe and enriching museum experience for young people. We are in the process of creating a Sensory Trail to enhance the visit for all ages and abilities and there is a virtual tour of the upper galleries for those unable to take the stairs.

🎶🎭 'To Win the Day' comes to Sherborne!

Join us on Wednesday 10th June for an evening of powerful storytelling and music with 'To Win the Day', the acclaimed folk drama created and performed by Dorset theatre company, Time and Tide.

Through traditional folk song, the play tells the stories of the women and families left behind after the Tolpuddle Martyrs were transported to Australia in 1834. A moving performance not to be missed.

This morning we were delighted to welcome members of the Sherborne Ladies Tangent Club for a special viewing of items from our fabulous textile collection.

Our curator, Elisabeth, and collections care volunteer, Marjorie, thoroughly enjoyed sharing some of the collection’s highlights, including iconic Dorset sunbonnets; Georgian embroidered shoes; a silk panel created by renowned textile designer Anna Maria Garthwaite (1688–1763); exquisite examples of 17th-century Brussels lace; and an opulent uniform worn by a pageboy at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

It is always such a pleasure to share these treasures with the community, and especially rewarding to see the enthusiasm, fascination, and sense of wonder they inspire in our visitors.

If you would like to arrange a private tour or group visit, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please do get in touch.

Our team was very sorry to hear the news of the recent fire at the former Newell House School. Although it has stood empty for a number of years, we know it still holds deep meaning for past generations of students and the wider community. We sympathise with everyone who feels a sense of loss at this moment.

The news prompted us to reflect on how this important part of local history is represented in our collections. At present we only hold a small number of items, and we would very much like to change that.

We are beginning to explore the possibility of creating a lasting archive to preserve the story of the building and the school for future generations. With enough support we hope this could lead to an exhibition in the autumn or early spring, celebrating its history and the memories connected with it.

To help us build this picture we would be grateful to hear from anyone who might donate or loan items such as photographs, documents, uniform or other memorabilia, including personal reflections. At this stage, we are simply asking for expressions of interest – please don’t bring in items just yet but do contact us on [email protected] to let us know what you might have.

As a starting point, we’re pleased to share here a donation made earlier this year of a beautifully kept blazer and cap, which offers a glimpse into the school’s past and the pride of its pupils.

📣 Event reminder!

Join us tomorrow for our penultimate talk of the 2025-2026 season, as Valerie Brenton, a volunteer at the Dorset History Centre, brings to life the letters of Maude Dudley, a West Dorset nanny from the early 1900s. Through Maude’s personal letters, Valerie will reveal what domestic service was truly like in the Edwardian era, including the daily duties and changing demands of live-in servants.

Volunteering opportunity: Front of House Team Co-Ordinator ⭐

Sherborne Museum recently received VisitEngland’s 'Hidden Gem' Accolade for excellence in customer service and visitor experience. Our Front of House volunteers were also named Team of the Year in 2025 - and we’re now looking for a Front of House Team Co-Ordinator to help support the people behind that success.

This is a people-focused role at the heart of the museum - ideal for someone who enjoys organising, supporting others, and helping things run smoothly.

You’ll help to:
• Co-ordinate the Front of House volunteer rota
• Support and guide our volunteer team
• Help ensure visitors receive a warm, welcoming experience

⏰ Around 2–3 hours per week, including some remote working
💛 A meaningful role in a friendly, community-run museum
