The Hanseatic Booth

The Hanseatic Booth The Hanseatic Booth was restored in 1984 as a museum depicting the story of the Hansa German merchant traders from records as far back as the 16th century.

The Hanseatic Booth or Pier House Museum is located in Symbister, Whalsay. It is a stone building that rises straight from the sea. No one knows how old it is but it is said to have been built by German merchants. Merchants from Bremen were recorded to have come to Whalsay in the 16th century and from Hamburg in the 17th century. The story of these traders can be read from interpretive panels ins

ide the museum. You can visit by getting the keys for the Booth from JWJ Whalsay's shop across the road. If visiting outside shop hours or on a Sunday please message our page for assistance. Admission for adults is Β£2 each and children can go free.

Peerie Oorick is a lovely peerie shop with a range of gifts and crafts on sale. Check out their page for opening times.

Auld Manse Whalsay have some cafe days planned in Easter, check out the page. Booking advisable.

Have a browse in our local shops;
Tetley & Anderson Ltd are a well stocked shop and make delicious stuffing along with other delights.
JWJ Whalsay Ltd is a 2 floor store where you can find many goods including diy tools and a gift department.

You'll find a sandy beach at the Kirk Ayre and fine walks include up the Ward o Clate, around Skaw Taing and Houll Loch.

At Skaw there is Britains most northerly golf club at Whalsay Golf Club

Whalsay Leisure Centre
has a swimming pool and many other activities
One of Whalsays two playparks is also here, the other at Brough, near SHOARD.

Challister Bakes is Whalsay's cake fridge, check the page for opening times.

Pye shed sell tasty pies, sausage rolls and homebakes. Opening times can be found on their page.

Whalsay Heritage and Community Centre will be opening later in the year, keep an eye on their page for news about their new exhibition.

Whalsay Boating Club is open in the evenings for refreshements and also has pool table and darts boards.

Started on Hinges for the Hanseatic BΓΆd in Whalsay. Being made from wrought iron and fire welding the eye in. Can see the end of the scarf in the photo but will blend when im making the hinge to its final thickness.

Many thanks to Scott Fraser for installing the Hanseatic Booth’s new larch wood doors. The trustees are delighted to have these installed before another Winter. The new doors will help preserve the booth for generations to come.
