Wow! What a very busy week we’ve had, especially Gary…

A presentation in Goring in Tuesday, a tour at the fort in Wednesday evening and a sold out Tin Hut Talk and tour of the fort Thursday evening. To top it all off we had a volunteer day yesterday and got to meet even more wonderful people who had come to the coast for a day out and found us. They were so engaged in the project and behind everything we do that their words of encouragement made all the hard work worth while.

Our next Tin Hut Talk is the one and only Trevor Povey, whose talk sheds some light on Shoreham’s HUGE but very overlooked involvement in D-Day. A lot of combined research has gone into this talk to please do come along and help get Shoreham on the map.

As always, please do book your tickets in advance. We can’t really accept drop ins as we are limited in numbers. If you are spreading the word of our talks then please do also spread the words that it is a ticketed event.

See you there for a cuppa and what looks set to be a very interesting talk.

It’s not often you’ll get me lens side of the camera, let alone posting a pic on Facebook… but I am just sooooo proud of ‘Ar Kid Grimmy’ and so honoured to have played a small part in her amazing year as First Citizen - Mayor of Brighton and Hove.

We’ve known Amanda for a very long time and she has always supported everything we do at Shoreham Fort. To have her on site, in an official capacity, was a huge privilege and we cannot thank her enough for her belief in the project and for spreading the word far and wide for us.

Please do click on the link (you might recognise a photo or two) and get just a small insight into how much Amanda has done this past year. She has been so supportive of so many groups and individuals and has kept it real, every single step of the way. This is how it should be done - genuinely supporting your community and giving it your all.

Thank you so much Amanda-Jane Grimshaw, not only for what you have done for us but what you have done for every single person on this incredible journey.

I think you have left incredibly large shoes for the new mayor to fill, but we wish her well.

There is so much more to Shoreham Fort than bricks and mortar, so don’t miss out on hearing the facts from Gary, who has been researching the site for 32 years.

A nice cuppa will be waiting for you and we look forward to seeing you there.

Last week we had an unexpected early birthday present from one of our volunteers…

West Downs Neighbourhood Watch Task Force was set up 26 years ago, when Sarah Payne went missing. The organisation became a very proactive, volunteer-led community safety initiative. They primarily operated in West Sussex but were specifically linked to Worthing and surrounding rural areas.

They worked alongside Sussex Police as ‘eyes and ears’ to help reduce crime and antisocial behaviour but, with the advancement of technology, the large physical searches were needed less.

After 26 years the group is winding up but they wanted their hard work to benefit others, so Friends of Shoreham Fort, the Rotary and Lions have all received support in the form of a donation - ourselves receiving £1,500.

With huge thanks to Alan and the West Downs Team for their hard work and commitment to the safety of others over all these years and for the belief in our charity with what we are doing on site and with our education and outreach programme.

You’ve left us a little speechless.

Today there are two celebrations for the Friends of Shoreham Fort…

Firstly, it is our chairman Gary’s birthday and secondly is it 16 years today that the Friends of Shoreham Fort was officially launched, with a cannon firing…

Happy birthday Gary, we all hope you have a wonderful day and congratulations for another successful year of caring for Shoreham Fort’s past, present and future.

We always say that teamwork makes the dream work but someone needed to have the dream…

If anyone would like to come down and wish Gary a personal happy birthday then some of us be there from 11:00-16:00.

A number of our volunteers are unable to join us though, as they will be at their Sompting and District Model Railway Club exhibition - good luck guys, I hope you also have a super day x

What an absolutely wonderful day today…

Such a fabulous, relaxed and friendly atmosphere with sellers, buyers and volunteers all enjoying the site, the bargains and the sunshine… thank you to the sellers for their generous donations and thank you to the buyers who added to the collection pot too - every donation is very much appreciated and every penny is ploughed right back into the project.

Huge thanks also go to Warden Appleby and Warden Barrow for their pop up Air Raid Shelter Experience today! It was great to give people a little indication of what we do and how well we do it :)

Our next Militaria Fair is 6th June and we look forward to seeing you there :)

Before that we have our next Tin Hut Talk on 21st May. Our very own chairman, Gary Baines, is giving a talk and small tour of Shoreham Fort, sharing our unique and diverse history which incorporates The Charge of the Light Brigade, a famous British Actor and French Spies… with 32 years of researching the site, there isn’t much Gary doesn’t know.

To guarantee your space please click the link below and we look forward to seeing you there.
