Our curators have been revisiting our costume catalogue and updating our records for a whole box of men’s waistcoats.

These are mostly 19 century in origin and many are part of the huge Aqualate Hall collection donated from the Boughey Family.

Some of the smaller ones probably belonged to Sir John F Boughey as they are very small just like his tailcoat we shared last week.

The others, which are also part of that collection, are from a much larger gentleman with a 40inch chest!

There are some very fine and luxurious examples which show the owners wealth. Although they are not just fashion pieces- we were amazed by the softness and warmth of a cashmere waistcoat which would have helped immensely to keep the wearer warm in wintertime.

This exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, created with Shrewsbury Civic Society, shows how Shropshire’s civic spaces worked day to day, from medieval guildhalls combining trade and governance to later Shirehalls designed for modern public services.

🕙 Open Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–4pm (closed Sunday & Monday)
