Inside the Collection (Ep 3) | 1924 Montgomery-Anzani | National Motorcycle Museum

We are stepping back into the roaring twenties for the latest episode of our monthly series, shining a spotlight on an absolute powerhouse of the "vintage superbike" era: the legendary 1924 Montgomery-Anzani.

Watch as John Oakes Classicbikeman and Museum Director James Hewing get up close with this spectacular 8-valve V-twin machine. Together, they dive into its fascinating aviation-rooted engineering and that unmistakable, jaw-dropping four-pipe exhaust layout.

Inside the Collection is your monthly all-access pass behind the scenes of the Museum’s unrivalled collection, uncovering the hidden history behind the world’s most iconic British motorbikes.

We’ve just welcomed an incredibly rare piece of engineering history to the National Motorcycle Museum: a 1980 Triumph T140MF Anti-Vibration Prototype.

This isn't your standard Bonnie. Back in the late '70s, UK police forces wanted the power of a British twin but without the numbing hand-shake. Enter Dr. Paul Morton, a brilliant mind seconded to Triumph (Meriden) from industrial giant GEC.

Instead of just using rubber engine mounts (like the T140AV models), Dr. Morton went a step further. He engineered the "Morton System" - an internal balancer shaft that ran forward inside uniquely modified crankcases.

Check out the photos to see:
- The beautifully preserved, sleek black and gold Triumph prototype itself.
- A close-up of the front crankcase, showing the heavy custom weld work required to house the revolutionary balancer shaft.
- Dr. Morton’s original demonstration models showing how the system counteracted those massive reciprocal forces.

The best part? This incredible machine was generously donated to us by Dr. Morton’s granddaughter, Sarah. Along with the bike, she handed over a treasure trove of history: all of his original design drawings, handwritten calculations, factory meeting minutes, and newspaper clips.

After the project ended, Dr. Morton actually kept the bike and rode it on the road for years. Right now, our museum restoration team is hard at work recommissioning it so we can get this smooth-riding piece of history back on the bitumen where it belongs!

Museum People | Chris Wall 🛠️

What does it take to keep British motorcycling history alive and running? For Chris Wall, it’s literally a family tradition.

This time we’re catching up with Chris from our Restoration Team to talk about three generations of family history, major career pivots, and what it takes to keep classic British bikes on the road.

For Chris, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing a bike go from arrival to full display, or watching a classic machine out on the road doing exactly what it was built to do. He’s learning from the best in the business (even if he won't name who the toughest boss is to keep the peace!) and doing his part to ensure these bikes are preserved for generations to come.

Want to know his ultimate favourite bike, or who actually makes the best brew in the workshop?

Drop a comment below to show Chris and our amazing restoration team some love!
