Southam Heritage Collection

Southam Heritage Collection The Collection contains documents, photographs and recordings relating to the history of Southam, its people and surrounding area.

The Collection consists of over 10,000 historical items specifically relating to the town of Southam in Warwickshire, England. These are looked after by volunteers, who share their local knowledge and skills to help preserve, research and display some of them in exhibitions. Monthly local history articles are written and history books published.

💡What Is It Wednesday?

🎉Shoutout to everyone who guessed "medieval torture device"—you were wrong, but we admire your dark imagination!

🟥This funky tool is actually a pair of Antique Metal Wick Trimming Scissors (often called a candle snuffer).

🕯️Back in the day, candle wicks didn't just magically disappear as they burned. They grew long, mushroomed, smoked out the room, and spat hot wax everywhere.

Standard scissors would just drop the fiery, molten wick onto your nice rug.

Enter this genius invention: The blades clipped the flaming wick.

The little metal box instantly trapped the hot, smelly debris.

Your house didn't burn down. Success!

So, the next time you flip a light switch, thank your lucky stars you don't have to follow your lamps around with a tiny metal coffin.

History holds some strange secrets, Southam... and apparently some aggressive-looking metalwork!

Take a close look at this rusted contraption from our collection. It looks like a pair of scissors that tried to become a toolbox and gave up halfway through. 🛠️

What on earth did our ancestors use this for?

To help you out, here are a few clues:

It’s NOT a medieval toe-nail clipper (thank goodness).

It was a vital household item in the 1700s and 1800s.

Without it, your living room would smell terrible and potentially catch fire.

Is it a weapon? An old-school multi-tool? A very specific mustache trimmer? ✂️

The wait is over! If you guessed the legendary Tarsus Restaurant, you are absolutely correct! 🇬🇷✨

For nearly four decades, Tarsus brought a true taste of Greece to Southam. This photograph captures one of their famous Greek nights, featuring a brilliant belly dancing performance that always got the whole room clapping along.
From the plate smashing to the legendary hospitality, it was the ultimate place for a celebration.
