The Collection contains documents, photographs and recordings relating to the history of Southam, its people and surrounding area.

The Collection consists of over 10,000 historical items specifically relating to the town of Southam in Warwickshire, England. These are looked after by volunteers, who share their local knowledge and skills to help preserve, research and display some of them in exhibitions. Monthly local history articles are written and history books published.

📚 📖 COUNTDOWN TO THE SOUTHAM BOOK FESTIVAL: 3 DAYS TO GO! 📖

The excitement is building! This coming Sunday 11 October, the brilliant Southam Book Festival officially takes over the Graham Adams Centre!

If you haven't taken a stroll through the Tithe Place Atrium yet, make sure to view our magical Entry Number 19 in the "Book in the Window" competition before the trail ends. The grand winner will be announced live at the festival this Sunday

🚨 VISIT OUR STALL THIS SUNDAY:
The Southam Heritage Collection team will be there in person all day at the Graham Adams Centre

We will be running a fantastic local stall featuring:
• 📜 Our popular, highly detailed local history books charting the heritage of our town.
• 🎨 A beautiful selection of unique heritage greeting cards featuring nostalgic local views.

Did you guess the purpose of Monday’s polished brass tool?
This clever device is an authentic vintage military button stick (or button guard)
Here is the history behind this essential piece of uniform maintenance preserved in our archive:
• Polishing Protection: When a soldier or officer needed to polish the brass buttons on their tunic or coat, they slid this metal stick behind the buttons using the long central slot. The brass plate completely shielded the fabric, allowing them to polish away vigorously without getting any messy metal cleaner on the clean uniform cloth.
• The Extra Holes: The two circular cutouts and unique edge notches were designed to accommodate [Insert specific detail, e.g., different sized buttons, hooks, or collar badges], making it a truly versatile multipurpose tool.
• A Soldier's Essential: These rugged brass sticks were standard issue for generations of servicemen and women, ensuring they always looked incredibly sharp on parade.

Did you manage to guess the purpose of Monday’s mystery gadget?

This pocket-sized lifesaver is an authentic vintage British Army folding tin can opener.

These clever little tools were a staple of military life, tucked into standard military ration packs for decades.
Here is the history behind this ingenious piece of field gear preserved in our archive:

The Stamped Code: If you look closely at the handle inscription, it reads "BR C.L. M. 195...". The "BR" and "C.L. M." designate the British manufacturer, while the "195" confirms it was stamped during the 1950s national service era.

Pocket Engineering: Based on the classic World War II P-38 design, this tool consists of two simple metal pieces on a hinge. The sharp tooth folds out at a right angle so soldiers could easily "walk" the blade around a tin lid out in the field without needing a bulky kitchen drawer tool.

A Veteran's Best Friend: Veterans famously used these rugged, lightweight tools for far more than opening dinner—they served as makeshift screwdrivers, boot scrapers, and wire st*****rs, making them highly prized possessions.

We are thrilled to announce that the Southam Heritage Collection has officially entered the town’s brilliant “Book in the Window” competition, and we need your support!Sponsored by the fantastic Southam Book Festival, there are 24 entries hidden in windows across the town.

We are incredibly proud to be Entry Number 19!Where to find us: Our competitive display is set up inside our Exhibition Room window in the Atrium right inside Tithe Place.

When to view: You don’t have to wait for our morning opening hours. The display can be viewed anytime the main Tithe Place building itself is open. Come take a stroll through the Atrium and see if you can spot Entry 19.

The grand winner of the competition will be announced at the Southam Book Festival, taking place at the Graham Adams Centre on Sunday 11 October.
