British Surrealism and Beyond: treasures from Southampton City Art Gallery at The Treasure House Fair , coming this June.

The fourth edition of Treasure House Fair marks a major anniversary — 90 years since the International Surrealist Exhibition opened in London in June 1936. To celebrate the occasion, Southampton City Art Gallery will present a special display drawn from its distinguished collection, featuring works by Roland Penrose and Paul Nash alongside pioneering women artists including Eileen Agar, Ithell Colquhoun, and Edith Rimmington, as well as celebrated surrealist figures such as Paul Delvaux.

The exhibition will be hosted throughout the duration of Treasure House Fair from 24–30 June 2026.

New UCL research suggests arts and cultural engagement — including visiting galleries and museums — is linked to a slower pace of biological ageing. So… why not swap the botox and fillers for a free visit to the Art Gallery? 😄

Pop in, slow down, and take five with your favourite artwork.

Can a single definition ever capture what it means to be a woman?

Join us on Saturday 16 May, 2–3pm for a Philosophy and Art Talk with Fiona Woollard from the University of Southampton.

This engaging session explores why many people look for a clear definition of ‘woman’, and why lived experience suggests something far more complex and personal. Drawing on philosophy and the artworks on display, Fiona will consider whether philosophical thinking can help us make sense of this complexity — and what we gain by trying.

Part of our Philosophy and Art series, these talks connect big ideas with everyday questions in a welcoming, discussion‑led format.

The Young Ones Art Club (ages 7–13) returns on Saturday 9 May, 10.30am–12.30pm, led by Southampton‑based artist Alex Sutherland.

Each monthly session takes inspiration from artworks on display in the gallery, encouraging children to experiment with different materials, explore new ideas and have fun making their own creations.

Adults are welcome to drop children off or stay for the session, and no previous experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to get creative.

9 May · 13 June · 11 July · 8 August
