Join us at the Beecroft Art Gallery for a screening of Peter Weir’s quietly unsettling classic, Picnic at Hanging Rock. Set in the Australian countryside at the turn of the 20th century, the film follows a group of schoolgirls on a Valentine’s Day excursion to the ancient Hanging Rock — an outing that drifts into something far more elusive and inexplicable.

With its gauzy visuals, dreamlike pacing, and haunting score, the film resists easy explanation, unfolding instead as a mood piece steeped in suggestion and unease. What begins as a pastoral escape gradually slips into ambiguity, where absence speaks louder than answers and the landscape itself feels charged with mystery.

Widely regarded as a landmark of atmospheric cinema, Picnic at Hanging Rock continues to captivate with its strange, lingering power.

Taken from the Colchester Art Society Permanent Collection and on view in Colchester Art Society at 80:

Joyce Pallot (1912 to 2004), *Essex Seaside*, 1981

Born in Brightlingsea and educated at Colchester County High School for Girls, Pallot went on to study industrial art and design at Colchester and Southend School of Art. While studying in Colchester in 1932 she met artist Henry Collins, whom she married in 1938, beginning a creative partnership that lasted over 60 years.

A founding member of Colchester Art Society in 1946 alongside John Nash and Cedric Morris, Pallot was a regular and leading exhibitor at the Minories for more than four decades. She also exhibited widely, including at the Mercury Theatre, Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury and the Trafford Gallery in London, where she held a solo exhibition in 1968.

Throughout the 1970s she worked on commissions and murals with Collins, including a public work still visible outside Sainsbury’s in Kingsway, Colchester. Her work is held in private collections as well as schools, hotels and industrial settings.

This colourful and geometric view of the Essex seaside in summer is probably made up from various sketches during visits to the Essex coast, hence its ambiguous title. There is no evidence that this is a particular place

'Information Overload'
Sara Impey
Fabric and stitch

Layering text, pattern and image, Impey explores the constant stream of information that shapes how we see and understand the world. Fragments overlap and compete, echoing the noise of modern life and the challenge of making sense of it.

On view until Sunday 17 May.

🎬 Southend CineScene presents: PlayTime (1967)

Step into Jacques Tati’s dazzling modernist comedy a visually inventive, meticulously choreographed portrait of Paris in the age of glass, steel, and confusion.

Following the gentle Monsieur Hulot through a maze of reflections, office blocks, and baffling technology, PlayTime turns everyday moments into brilliantly staged visual gags. A film to get lost in and laugh with, on the big screen.
