“It’s been a little bit of a wake up call for me” - Participating teacher 💡

We’ve been gathering around studio desks, dining tables, campfires and projectors to spend time with school teachers and artists. Here’s a look back at the first year of Creative Break Time, a collaborative, active research project hosted by Focal Point Galley, Metal Southend and The Other MA (TOMA), supported by

So far, we have hung out in intensive residencies across Essex, travelled by boat to cross the Blackwater Estuary, shared our work at the iJADE 2025 Conference, hosted crits for artists and teachers, commissioned teachers to create wellbeing gifts and tools for their colleagues and co-developed new tools to ‘itch the curriculum’. Our co-researchers include teachers from Greenways Primary, Milton Hall Primary, Shoeburyness High and St Bernard’s High School.

We want to bring Southend artists and teachers together in transformative ways, emphasising care, rest, wellbeing and meaningful collaboration. By investing in teachers’ creativity, we hope to bring about lasting change in Southend schools across all curriculums and key stages.

This film was made by Realm Video and includes footage filmed at Old Leigh Studios, Metal Southend, Othona Community, The Old Waterworks and Hadleigh Country Park.

Thinking of setting up an Alt Art School? Make sure to get your hands on a copy of 'How to Set Up an Art School' out on 27th May.

Tracing TOMA’s evolution from an experimental, process-driven studio initiative to a thriving artist-led educational platform, the book underscores the role of education as both an artistic medium and a form of activism. It encourages artists to envision themselves beyond the constraints of the traditional art market, embracing alternative modes of art-making as strategies for creative survival within capitalism.

We are so looking forward to TOMA’s Day of Sharing at Beecroft Art Gallery, Southend  on Sunday 4th May.

Expect an afternoon packed with performance, sound, and moving image, with a chance to chat to the artists informally about their processes, ideas, and inspirations.

Today we’re showcasing artist Lucy Daley   who has designed the logos and branding for this event and our Reject Reflect Reclaim show.

Lucy is a multidisciplinary practitioner who uses various means of making, observing, and spying to create artwork her independent, curiosity-driven creative practice explores her place within the world and people around her and the spaces they inhabit.

Here’s some examples of Lucy’s  current work at the Beecroft Art Gallery.

'How to Set Up an Art School' on failure

“The dictionary defines failure as a lack of success. But failure is more of a social concept: of not meeting a desirable or intended objective. Through failure comes learning and a way of doing things. We are familiar with the sense of failure that austerity evokes, and TOMA emerged in response to these conditions. ‘Being wrong’ can be a tool to shape the art school material.”

The book, 'How to Set Up an Art School', envisions a future where artists support one another, build sustainable alternatives, and resist the individualism imposed by market-driven art systems.

This work has been funded by Arts Council England, Bruce McLean and Necessity.info.
