🌿 Fresh from the kitchen garden 🌿

Today’s harvest is ready for visitors to take home, with redcurrants, gooseberries, beetroot and rhubarb freshly picked by our dedicated gardens team.

The garden at The Workhouse & Infirmary was once a place of labour and a vital source of food for those who lived here. Today, it continues to thrive, producing heritage fruit and vegetables throughout the growing season.

Produce is available for a donation, with every penny raised helping to support the conservation and care of this special place.

Keep an eye on the produce cart during your next visit – you never know what seasonal treasures you might find.

Our Workhouse Wellness Walks, on the last Friday of every month, are a great way to meet new people and enjoy some gentle exercise outdoors.

A neatly made bed. A quiet ward. A story waiting to be told.

Opened in 1871, the Infirmary was built to care for those who were too ill to remain in the workhouse. Over the decades, its role changed as healthcare and social care evolved, continuing to support residents until the late 1980s.

The people who slept here, recovered here and spent their final years here are part of a story that stretches far beyond the Victorian workhouse.

Their stories still echo through the building today.

⚽🐭 The mice are match ready!

With the 2026 World Cup kicking off tomorrow, our talented volunteers have been busy creating a brand-new team of football mice.

Handcrafted with the same care and attention as our popular Pauper, Nurse and Gardener mice, these sporting little characters are ready to take to the pitch and cheer on their favourite teams.

The limited edition mice are available to purchase as a memento of your visit, with all proceeds helping to support the conservation and care of The Workhouse & Infirmary.

A huge thank you to our textile volunteers, whose skill and imagination continue to bring these much-loved mice to life.

As part of this year's Big Help Out campaign, we're inviting visitors to lend a hand at The Workhouse & Infirmary this coming Sunday.

We're looking for volunteers to help with some light weeding across the site, as well as getting creative with bunting making for our Summer of Play event.

Whether you can spare a little time or stay for longer, your support would make a big difference.

A different kind of visitor at The Workhouse and Infirmary today 🐾🚔

We’ve been supporting both Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire Police by providing the site as a specialist training venue for their police dogs and handlers.

Throughout the day, the dogs have been carrying out a range of exercises including open searches, hidden searches and bite work training. We’ve also welcomed Leicestershire Police’s digital evidence detection dog, specially trained to locate anything with a memory, from SIM cards to hidden flash drives.

With its maze of rooms, corridors and historic spaces, The Workhouse proved the perfect setting for these impressive dogs to put their skills to the test.

Join our costumed characters for Tales from The Workhouse this weekend and discover what daily life was really like within these historic walls.

Listen to stories from the past, write on a slate, help with the washing and even learn how to pick oakum as history is brought to life around the site.

Storytelling sessions take place at 11.30, 12.30 & 14.00.
