Spalding Gentlemen's Society

Spalding Gentlemen's Society In that year formal meetings began with the appointment of officers and the keeping in minutes.

A wondrous place... Founded in 1710, Spalding Gentlemen’s Society is Britain’s oldest provincial learned society and second-oldest surviving museum, library and archive. It began with a series of informal meetings of a few local gentlemen at a coffee-house in the Abbey Yard, Spalding, in 1710 to discuss local antiquities and to read The Tatler, a newly published London periodical. In 1712 it was d

ecided to place these meetings upon a permanent footing and proposals were issued for the establishing of "a Society of Gentlemen, for the supporting of mutual benevolence, and their improvement in the liberal sciences and in polite learning". The founder, Maurice Johnson, also played a leading part in refounding the Society of Antiquaries of London, and for some years an exchange of minutes took place. Francis, Duke of Buccleuch (1695-1751), Lord of the Manor of Spalding-cum-Membris, became Patron of the Society in 1732.

Today, we’re sharing another item from our collections. These photographs show a decoratively painted silk jacket in a high-waisted spencer style. The clothing is likely to date from the late Victorian or early Edwardian periods.

During the condition survey, we noted that the decorative paint was beginning to flake, so Paraloid B-72 was used to preserve and seal it in. This formulation comes supplied as crystals, which are then mixed with solvent, until it is the desired thickness for painting on the fabric.

We’re currently being supported by Art Fund the national charity for museums and galleries, to carry out the first large-scale redisplay of our collections in more than a century - with the help of volunteers, our members, and the public.

To glove or not to glove, that is the question!

We regularly do object-handling training with new volunteers in the Society. One of the most questioned and important aspects is the use of gloves.

You probably have an image in your head of a museum worker in white cotton gloves. Historically, they were commonly used in museums and archives, though in the last couple of decades they have been phased out by most institutions.

Read more about the use of gloves in our latest blog by conservator Mary: https://www.sgsoc.org/to-glove-or-not-to-glove
